Business Coach Asks the Hard Questions - NYTimes.com

In my last post, Susan Martin, a business coach, pressed Alexandra Mayzler to articulate her vision for her company, Thinking Caps Tutoring. Ms. Mayzler was clear that she wanted to see a ?revolution in education? that elevated the importance of study skills. She was less clear, however, about what role her company might play in this revolution.

Next, Ms. Martin turned to Susan Parker, who owns Bari Jay, which makes and sells bridesmaid and prom dresses. ?My vision is much shorter than Alexandra?s,? Ms. Parker said. ?I just want to have more control over my manufacturing.?

?Let?s take it one step further,? Ms. Martin responded. ?If you had more control, what would that allow you to do??

?To grow the way I want to grow,? Ms. Parker said. ?Right now, I?m so dependent on how many dresses I can get made and where and how that I?m constantly worried.? Last year, she said, Bari Jay grew so quickly that she wondered if its success would lead to its demise. ?If people can?t get the dresses they ordered, they?re not going to want to do business with you,? she said. Things worked out in the end and have improved this year, but looking ahead, Ms. Parker believes manufacturing in Asia, where prices are rising, will become increasingly challenging. ?If you push them too much, either with delivery or price, then you sacrifice on quality,? she said, ?and that?s one thing we?re trying not to do.?

Ms. Parker hired a consultant to help Bari Jay explore other options. ?I?m looking into domestic production again, but I?m still unionized, which makes it difficult,? she said. If Bari Jay manufactures its dresses in the United States, it must use union factories, an expensive proposition. ?On top of that, the U.S. doesn?t really have the skilled workers anymore,? she said. Still, Ms. Parker is speaking with union representatives to see what is possible, and her consultant is trying to find suitable union factories.

Central America, which her consultant suggested, is also under consideration. She asked him to research it, and get back to her. Ms. Parker said someone suggested Bari Jay build its own factory. ?I?m like, O.K., that sounds really expensive and really difficult,? she said. ?But get me information and I?ll look into it.? Ms. Parker feels the issue is in good hands and the process has just begun.

Ms. Martin asked how things would change for Bari Jay if its manufacturing woes disappeared.

Ms. Parker said she envisioned no major changes. She loves Bari Jay?s business model, which focuses on selling through smaller boutiques as opposed to department stores that take a greater chunk of the profit. ?I want to grow, but keep my margins the same,? she said.

In a perfect world,?Ms. Martin asked, how would your role change?

Ms. Parker said it probably wouldn?t change either. As a result of their work with their own business coach (not Ms. Martin), Ms. Parker said she and her sister, a co-owner, were seeing the big picture more and had mostly freed themselves from the compulsion to micromanage their employees. To the extent Ms. Parker keeps a hand in certain day-to-day tasks, she said, ?It?s because I?m a control freak and I like those things.?

Turning to Jessica Johnson, Ms. Martin asked her to share her vision for her company, Johnson Security Bureau.

?My vision is more long-term,? said Ms. Johnson. ?I want to have something that I can pass on to my children ? I don?t have any children yet ? and that they would want to be involved with.?

Like Ms. Parker, Ms. Johnson is pleased with developments at her business and would like to continue growing. ?If we just close the contracts that we?re currently negotiating, we?ll double last year?s sales,? she said. Just as they did from 2010 to 2011.

?Nice job,? said Ms. Mayzler.

But Ms. Johnson isn?t complacent. Because Johnson Security waits 30 to 90 days for payment on various contracts, it is exploring ways to bring in money faster. The company could, for example, offer training, product sales, or consulting services, in addition to traditional security services.

?What?s your biggest challenge?? Ms. Martin asked.

?Talent development,? Ms. Johnson said, without hesitation. Even though the skills required of security guards are very basic, many candidates lack them. Most of her employees have neither high school diplomas, nor G.E.D.s. ?Similar to what Alexandra said, our education system isn?t preparing people to have basic skills,? she said. ?So, we?re expected as employers to train the workforce.?

The security industry is also dogged by low expectations. Ms. Johnson said her customers self select to a degree, but it?s common for companies to balk at paying more than $8-an-hour for security guards. ?If you want someone that is going to be alert, and able to write reports and speak intelligently, you?re going to have to pay that person more,? she said. ?If you don?t want to pay for it, then I?m not going to do business with you. There are 400 other companies you can deal with.?

?What have you done to address these issues so far?? Ms. Martin asked.

?We just try to stay very hands-on with clients, and over-communicate with them,? Ms. Johnson said. She recently visited one who was impressed that she made the effort. No matter how busy she gets, Ms. Johnson said, these visits are important because they help her understand her clients? businesses and let them know she cares. ?They know there?s a difference,? she said. ?For those who aren?t there yet, as my grandmother would say, you just have to keep loving on them until they get it.?

As for her employees, ?It?s a work in progress,? Ms. Johnson said. ?Some will get it and stay with the company and those who don?t will leave ? churn and burn.?

Bump Pay lets you tap a friend for cash

Image
Taking cues from an ING Direct app that used its API, Bump Technologies has developed its own version of the mobile payments software, enabling phone-to-phone "Bump" transactions using PayPal. Yes, PayPal. That minor processing detail aside, the service appears to offer a fun solution for simplifying the fairly painful process of paying the check at group meals, or splitting a tank of gas with a friend. Both you and your bud need to have the app installed before you can beam that green, and there's no option to send payments remotely, though you could always use plain ole vanilla PayPal for that. The app is free, and if you have a checking account linked you won't have to deal with any fees. Bump Pay is iOS only "at launch" (read: it could be making its way to Android as well), so for now you'll need to bump the App Store to get folks paid.

Bump Pay lets you tap a friend for cash originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 03:22:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Pinoy Michael Martinez has Achieved International Caliber in Ice ...

Despite government?s lack of support?

By Dionesio C. Grava

?And my other problem was that I was already forewarned by the PSU/NSA that if I bring my complaint of no support to the media, my son may not be given anymore international assignments.? ? Maria Teresa Martinez

At a time when most kids his age remain comfy inside the cocoons of parental dependency or otherwise preoccupied with fads or even mischief, Michael has been into rigid training of at least six hours each day ? and school studies in between ? in his efforts to make a better person of himself. In the process he has also been able to put the Philippines in the world ice skating map.

pinoywatchdog-michael-martinez-gold-medalsMichael was into recreational skating starting when he was eight-and-a-half years old. He had his first competitive event in Colorado Springs in June 2008 where he garnered several gold medals.

In October 2009 he won gold in all of his first major competitions under the International Skating Union (ISU) in Slovakia, Slovenia and Austria. He is also the undefeated champ of Asian junior figure skating since 2008 and had garnered many other international and local plums.

In September, last year, Michael placed eighth in the Junior Grand Prix of the World Figure Skating Championships held in Brisbane. In June of that same year he received the Hollin?s Trophy in Sydney. In the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games (WYOG) held from January 16-22, 2012, in Innsbruck, Austria, Michael was third in the short program and seventh in the free skate.

At age 15, Michael had amassed a total of 188 medals and trophies from both local and international competitions ? 146 of them gold medals. He has also a gold medal and five others won in local gymnastics.

Michael was in Belarus early this month competing in the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2012 and was quite impressed of the venue. In addition to the main ice ring, the huge sports arena has a separate rink for hockey, another for the public to practice, indoor speed skating tracks, medical facilities for athletes and more amenities. There are reportedly two other ice rinks built by the government so that their athletes can train with modern facilities.

?In Philippines,? Michael noted in his Facebook page, ?we only have 1 Olympic size ice rink in the whole country. & our ice rink is inside the shopping mall & it?s mainly for public skating. We are paying ice time but there is no freestyle session, so high level skaters cannot practice there.?

At that time he had just completed the junior men event and was feeling low because of his 15th place in a field of 40 skaters. He should have been ranked higher because his technical scores were the 8th highest, he said. Earlier he placed third in the preliminary rounds and sixth in the short program.

If the above feats and achievements of Michael are not daunting enough, fancy this: Snow in tropical Philippines is as exotic as, say, sighting the mythic Sasquatch. In fact the only ice most Filipinos would see in their lifetimes are the cubed ones we buy to cool our drinks. That being the case, Michael is further handicapped by sub-zero conditions as had occurred in Innsbruck and Belarus. He said of the latter, ?Coming from a tropical country, negative 15 Celsius is too cold for me.?

pinoywatchdog-michael-martinezAnd then there are the injuries. Michael was quoted in one interview saying, ?Ang ayaw ko lang sa skating: ma-injured.? (The only thing I dislike in skating is getting injured.) And to reduce the incidence of injury, Michael cross-trains in gymnastics, plyometrics and trampoline. Still skating is an injury-prone sport and in addition to being asthmatic, Michael had experienced many falls, repeated injuries and torn ligaments during trainings and competitions.

In Merano, Italy, for example, he had to withdraw from the competition because a thigh was pierced by the skate blade during a bad fall and he had to be rushed to the hospital because of profuse bleeding. In October-November of 2010 he missed several competitions because of ankle injuries that had him in cast for three months. In the recent Belarus games he hurt an ankle which gave him so much pain during practices and programs. Additionally he had sprained a knee and pulled back muscles that required three days of treatment in that country.

Michael is supposed to compete in the Asian Junior Challenge to be held in China this coming April 6 but had to withdraw due to injuries (sprain/swollen ankle) from a very bad fall/twisting of his ankle during his last day of practice in Anaheim before the flight back to Philippines.

Lip service from the government

During a press conference in Nov. 4, 2011, Manuel Veguillas of the Philippine Skating Union (PSU) grandly proclaimed the country?s choice of Michael Martinez as the lone representative to the Olympic Games in Austria: ?We?re blessed to have someone as talented as Michael to represent the country in the Winter Olympics.?

In an exchange of notes with Michael, however, PinoyWatchdog learned that the Philippine government has been nickel-and-diming its support to an athlete who has done much to bring honor and prestige to the country.

Wrote Michael: ?Nung lumaban nga ho ako sa Olympic qualifying last year, I just borrowed the coach of Thailand, kasi wala akong coach hindi kaya ni mama na gumasta para sa coach. Then nung lumaban ho ako sa Youith Olympics last January, wala rin ho akong coach uli. Si mama lang ang tumayong coach ko. Ayaw talaga nilang magsupport. Nung matapos yung Olympics dun lang nagabot ng konting pera ang PSC $700 at shoemart $850 para lang masabing tumulong sila kuno. Its too late dahil dapat tinulungan nila ako sa training ko for Olympics. Then again dito sa world championship, again ni singko wala silang itinulong uli?? (When I competed to qualify for the Olympics last year, I just borrowed the coach of Thailand because my mom could not afford to hire a coach. Then when I competed in the Youth Olympics last January, I again didn?t have a coach. My mother had to stand in as my coach. They really don?t want to give support. It was only after the Olympics that PSC handed out $700 and Shoemart $850 just so it can be said that they were helping. It was too late because they should have helped me during the training for the Olympics. Then again in this world championship, not even five centavos was given to help?)

His mother, Maria Teresa Martinez, agrees. Many times Michael had participated in international competitions without a coach because they could not afford to hire one. In an email dated March 13 to PinoyWatchdog.com, she said: ?I do not know who can help me bring my son?s case to the office of the President. I do not have any more money to support his training, and I feel so bad for my son because he had proven that he can defeat skaters from traditional skating countries, and he wants to qualify & compete in the 2014 regular winter Olympics, but we have no more budget for that. And my other problem was that I was already forewarned by the PSU/NSA that if I bring my complaint of no support to the media, my son may not be given anymore international assignments.?

In another note dated March 22 she said, ?? he (Michael) is not adequately supported/funded by Philippine sports agencies concerned ? the Philippine Skating Union (PSU), the national sports association for figure skating, and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). The only money they, PSU & PSC, have given so far was the daily allowance in Innsbruck during the youth Olympic games in Jan., 2012. Phil. Olympic Committee (POC) is helping to get a refund of Michael?s Youth Olympic training expenses from PSC (training expenses in Nov. 7, 2011 till Jan. 7, 2012) but there is no refund until today.?

On May 26, Mrs. Martinez wrote about Michael: ?His skate shoes was so much worn out (he was using it for more than a year, while normally skaters in his level change shoes every 4 to 5 months) but since we were trying to save money on very expensive skate shoes that currently costs $1,200 (with blades) then Michael was forced to skate (and compete in several prestigious competitions including Olympics and world championship) using his worn-out & unstable skate shoes (he was just wrapping the top portion of the shoes with packaging tapes to prevent the shoes from collapsing).?

She is grateful that a donor had come up with the amount to pay for a new pair of skating shoes. The same donor, as well as many other Californians, had also helped in Michael?s U.S. training expenses, she said.

?If Michael was not trained in the U.S., he will never stand a chance in competitive skating,? Mrs. Martinez said. ?But his training abroad depleted our life savings, sad to say. We had also ?exhausted? our relatives and friends who had also been giving financial support in the past, which enabled Michael to compete abroad. Everybody in our family ?sacrifices? just so Michael can continue with his U.S. training. Michael?s sister used to skate too, but had to stop skating due to high cost, same with his 2 nieces.?

?Michael badly needs sponsors for his continuing training in the U.S. since he has more competitions this year starting in July, August and onwards in preparation for his World Championship competition in March, 2013 (which is the qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympics),? Mrs. Martinez said. Mother and son Michael are currently in Manila with the latter catching up on school assignments.

Michael is the youngest of three children of Maria Teresa Martinez, a single parent. He will be in fourth year high school of the Muntinlupa School for Child Development in June (home-schooled). The eldest of the brood, Paul Alexis, is 29, married and in charge of the farm business. Maria Angelica, 19, is a full scholar at Colorado College in Colorado Springs pursuing a degree in Economics and Pre-Medicine. A high school graduate from San Beda College in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, she subsequently finished a two-year International Baccalaureate Course at the United World Colleges in Costa Rica.

AT&T, Verizon agree to stop 'cramming' phone bills

By Bob Sullivan

Verizon and AT&T have agreed to stop ?cramming? consumers' telephone bills with unauthorized third-party charges, Sen. Jay Rockefeller announced Wednesday. The move comes after a Senate investigation revealed last year that consumers were hit with $10 billion in fraudulent charges due to the practice over the past five years.

A TODAY show/msnbc.com investigation in July ?revealed how extensive and frustrating cramming is, with maddening, mysterious $10 or $20 charges appearing every month on millions of Americans' phone bills.

The investigation relied on a report commissioned by Rockefeller that found that three telecom firms - -- Verizon, AT&T and CenturyLink/Quest -- earned $650 million as their cut of cramming charges levied by third-parties since 2006.

"AT&T made the right decision to end cramming by August," the West Virginia Democrat?s office said in a statement on Wednesday.? "Something had to be done.? And while the decisions of AT&T and Verizon are a step in the right direction, I still believe we need to pass a bill that bans this abusive practice once and for all.?

?AT&T?has decided to discontinue most third-party billing on our customers? landline?accounts,??Michael Balmoris, an AT&T spokesman, said in a statement to msnbc.com. "We currently receive cramming complaints for only about one out of every thousand bills that contain third-party charges. ?However, due to continued concern over the possibility of unauthorized charges, we have decided to take this additional step and eliminate third-party billing for most types of services.?

Verizon spokesman Bill Kula also confirmed the change, saying in an email:??On March 19, Verizon?s wireline business?began?notifying its billing aggregators (or ?clearinghouses?) and carriers that it is going to cease providing third-party billing services for so-called 'miscellaneous' or 'enhanced' services.?All billing of those services will be phased out by the end of 2012.? ? Verizon wireline will continue to provide billing services for third party charges that generally relate to telecommunications or information services that use our network.?

Separately, Verizon earlier this month agreed to settle aclass-action lawsuit related to cramming, and agreed to refund 100 percent of victims' money for any unauthorized third-party charges consumers suffered from April 27, 2005, through Feb. 28, 2012.

Cramming has vexed consumers and generated mountains of complaints since 1995, when land line providers began making it easy for third-party firms to sell add-on services like voice mail through local phone bills.?

The problem is it's too easy for third parties to attach unwanted items to consumers' bills:? Previous investigations have found firms frequently trick consumers into signing up using sweepstakes entries or cashing small checks that also serve as authorization forms. In other cases, the third-party firms simply lie about getting authorization, a scam called ?phantom billing.? Last year, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan testified that usage rates for the unwanted services could be as low as 1 percent.

"Committee staff has found hundreds of egregious examples of cramming," the Rockefeller report found. "Third-party vendors have enrolled deceased persons in their so-called services and charged family members' telephone bills for it. They have charged telephone lines dedicated to fire alarms, security systems, bank vaults, elevators and 911 systems. Senior citizens' telephones have been enrolled in web-hosting services, even though they have never used. A children?s hospital was charged for a celebrity tracker e-mail service that provided daily celebrity news feeds, photo, and videos. A national bank?s telephone lines were charged for credit protection plans."

Perhaps nothing illustrates how out of control cramming had become as well as AT&T's own victimization.

"Committee staff confirmed that third-party vendors associated with one hub company crammed at least 80 of AT&T?s own telephone lines with charges for services such as voicemail, sometimes for periods as long as 18 months," the report said.

(AP) ? A man charged with the bizarre killing of a popular prep school teacher lived a hardscrabble though seemingly harmless life with his family, but little was known about the woman he married last year, shocked residents of northeastern Vermont said Thursday.

The body of Melissa Jenkins, a 33-year-old science teacher at St. Johnsbury Academy, was found Monday in the Connecticut River. Authorities say Allen and Patricia Prue lured her from her home with a ruse about a broken-down car and killed her. Jenkins' 2-year-old son had been found Sunday in her idling SUV.

The couple had been riding around Sunday when Allen Prue got the idea "to get a girl," a police affidavit said. They have not elaborated, and the trickle of information has the close-knit residents of northeastern Vermont talking and wondering about the motive.

Neighbor Jessica Fontecha said Allen Prue, 30, used to shovel snow and mow the lawn for her elderly parents without being asked. She called him when her lawn mower broke and he fixed it. Last winter, he drove her to her home in a snowstorm when she couldn't get up the slippery road.

"It's easy to say 'these horrible people,' but they weren't horrible people," Fontecha said.

But once Allen married Patricia last year, Fontecha said, "we didn't see much of him."

Patricia Prue's ex-husband said that Prue, whom he met online, had requested a restraining order on him but that they hadn't talked in a couple of years.

Jeffrey Witkoff, of Littleton, Colo., said she called him once repeatedly and he didn't answer. When he called her back, she asked why he was calling, he said.

The Vermont court from which Prue, 33, reportedly sought a restraining order would not confirm whether one was in the works. Marc Eagle, a lawyer for Prue, said he hadn't yet met with her.

The couple pleaded not guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder and unauthorized burial or removal of a dead body. They are being held without bail, and more charges are possible, police said.

Dan Maguire, Allen Prue's lawyer, called the case a tragedy.

"As with all Vermonters, my heart goes out to Ms. Jenkins' family and friends," Maguire said. "We all cherish the peaceful and tranquil life, which we have here in Vermont and are shocked when that peace is broken."

The Prues live with Allen's mother, a widow, in the same run-down mobile home in Waterford where he grew up. The town had been working with the Prues to clean up their property, which was littered with metal scrap, a pile of old tires, bags of garbage and a camper.

On Thursday, five state police vehicles were parked in front of the house, which was still adorned with Christmas decorations.

"They've had hard times, but they weren't a family of bad news," said Waterford Town Clerk Joanne Jurentkuff.

Allen Prue had plowed Jenkins' driveway and asked her out a couple of times, police said. She told a friend that she felt uncomfortable around him and later had him stop plowing, but that he showed up drunk at her home in autumn 2011 to ask whether he could plow the following year.

Police say Allen and Patricia lured Jenkins from her home, with the wife calling her to say they were broken down on her road. Allen Prue then strangled her, police said.

Jenkins' young son, Ty Robertson, apparently witnessed at least part of the attack, police said. When an investigator questioned him, he pulled on the back of his neck and indicated that a perpetrator had done the same to "mommy."

Back at their home, investigators say, Allen Prue put Jenkins' body on a tarp, removed her clothes and poured bleach on her body. The Prues also removed their clothes and put them on the tarp.

They then drove to a boat access at the Connecticut River, which separates Vermont from New Hampshire, and put Jenkins' body in the water, weighing it down with cinder blocks and concealing it with brush, court documents said.

Alicia Silverstone Chews Food, Regurgitates It Into Baby's Mouth

Apparently Alicia Silverstone chews food and regurgitates it into her 10-month-old son's mouth to nourish him. We know because she posted a video of this.

Alicia posted the video on her blog this weekend - well played once again, Internet - claiming it's her "favorite" way to feed her son Bear Blu (his real name).

"He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I’m eating," she says, without offering an explanation of why she engages in this behavior. Enjoy:

Is Alicia just trying to spare Bear Blu the arduous task of chewing? Does she believe there is some other health benefit to this? We may never know.

As for what they're eating, Alicia's a staunch vegan and is raising her son to be too, so we're guessing it's some delish soy tofu thing PETA hearts her for.

A parent's guide to foot health for athletic kids | Pro Hands at Work

(ARA) ? With the Olympics approaching in July, you can expect to witness some amazing feats of athleticism this summer. But Olympic athletes won?t be the only ones competing hard in summer sports ? so will your kids.

Millions of American children will participate in warm weather sports this year, from softball to soccer and swimming to cycling. No matter what their sport or whether they play competitively or just for fun, they will have one important thing in common: They?ll need their feet to be pain-free if they?re going to play their best and prevent injuries.

?Sports play a significant role in the lives of millions of young athletes,? says Dr. Michael King, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). ?Parents need to be aware that sports, which require a substantial amount of running, turning, and contact, can translate to injuries. Protecting children?s feet from injuries, and bringing them to a podiatrist when problems occur, can help keep kids in the game and make the sport more enjoyable.?

APMA offers some tips for helping protect children?s feet while playing warm weather sports:

* Protective taping of the ankles is often necessary to help prevent sprains or fractures.

* Buying a shoe designed for the specific sport your child plays not only improves your child?s performance in the sport, it also can help protect him or her from serious foot and ankle injuries. APMA has given its Seal of Acceptance to a select number of sports footwear, which offer all-leather materials and protective support.

* Without the right sock, even the best athletic shoe won?t score points-on the field or off. Athletic socks should consist of a natural/synthetic blend, which is best at wicking away moisture and minimizing foot odor. Socks should not have large seams that might cause blisters or irritation.

Commonly played warm-weather sports and the risks associated with them include:

* Basketball ? Children playing basketball may be at risk for ankle sprains, tendinitis and plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the thick band of tissue on the sole of the foot). To minimize the risk of foot injury, choose a shoe with a thick, stiff sole, high ankle support and shock absorption.

* Tennis ? The rapid, repetitive lateral movements and shifting of weight required of tennis players can lead to injuries such as ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis and corns or calluses. Tennis players will do best with a flexible-soled shoe that supports both sides of the foot.

* Running ? Movements required of runners include leg extension and hitting the balls of the feet with a great deal of force. Running can lead to shin splints, heel pain and blisters. A good running shoe should offer good support and shock absorption. In some cases, custom orthotics may be necessary to provide additional support and control of foot motion.

* Soccer ? The running, jumping and lateral movements required of soccer players can lead to many foot injuries, with heel pain and shin splints being among the most common. Soccer shoes should provide multiple cleats in the heel area and enough room for thick soccer socks.

?Sports-related foot and ankle injuries are on the rise as more children participate actively in sports,? King says. ?Parents need to be vigilant to ensure children?s feet remain healthy and safe. And remember ? lack of complaint by a child is not a reliable sign that everything is fine. The bones of growing feet are so flexible that they can be twisted and distorted without the child being aware of it.?

Ensuring your child?s feet stay healthy could go a long way ? your young athlete could one day be the next LeBron James or Brandi Chastain. If your child participates in strenuous sports, monitor his or her foot health closely. If you suspect a problem, take your child to a podiatrist for evaluation and treatment. Find one in your area by visiting APMA?s website at www.APMA.org.

Geraldo Rivera: Trayvon Martin Made Himself a Target With Hooded Sweatshirt

Fox News' Geraldo Rivera stunned viewers with remarks about the Trayvon Martin case, saying that by wearing a hooded sweatshirt, the slain teen made himself a target.

Martin, the 14-year-old candy-carrying, hoodie-wearing African-American boy, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a Sanford, Fla., neighborhood watch captain.

He was walking home from a 7-Eleven and was unarmed. Zimmerman, who claimed self defense, has not been charged, though a grand jury will hear the case.

Martin supporters participated in a "Million Hoodie March" to protest Zimmerman's freedom. But the hoodie has taken on new meaning thanks to Geraldo.

"When you see a kid walking down the street, particularly dark-skinned kid like my son Cruz - who I constantly yelled at when he was going out wearing a damn hoodie or those pants around his ankles, 'Take that hood off!'" Rivera said on Fox & Friends.

"People look at you, and what’s the instant identification, what’s the instant association? It’s those crime-scene surveillance tapes."

"Every time you see someone stickin’ up a 7-Eleven, the kid’s wearing a hoodie," Rivera continued. "Every time you see a mugging on a surveillance camera or they get that old lady in the alcove, it’s a kid wearing a hoodie."

"You have to recognize that this whole stylizing yourself as a 'gangsta' … You’re gonna be a gangsta wannabe? Well, people are going to perceive you as a menace. That’s just what happens. It is an instant reflexive action."

The negative reaction to this was fast and furious.

Many viewers claimed this was a call for a dress code for minorities, or equivalent to saying women who wear revealing clothes are asking to be raped.

Questlove sent a long series of Tweets at Rivera, including:

"sorry @GeraldoRivera, what i gotta stroll around rocking a tux 24 7 so i can put others who are ignorant at ease? what about the OTHER side of that coin?"

With more brevity but just as much furor, Parks & Recreation star Aziz Ansari said, "It's really appropriate to tweet this any day, but seriously, F--k you Geraldo."

Rivera followed up on Twitter, defending his position:

"My own son just wrote to say he's ashamed of my position re hoodies - still I feel parents must do whatever they can to keep their kids safe," he wrote.

"Its not blaming the victim Its common sense-look like a gangsta&some armed schmuck will take you at your word... Its sad that I have to be the one reminding minority parents of the risk that comes with being a kid of color in America."

Do you agree with Geraldo's comments on Trayvon Martin?

Syria rebel hubs hit as envoy arrives in Russia

Syria's army resumed heavy shelling of the rebel hubs of Homs and Hama on Saturday, monitors reported, as international envoy Kofi Annan arrived in Russia in a new push for peace.

Mortar rounds rained down on the flashpoint central city of Homs and nearby town of Qusayr from early morning, killing at least 10 people, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

At least 20 people were reported killed nationwide, among them four government soldiers.

The fiercest regime assault targeted Saraqeb in the northwestern province of Idlib which was stormed by troops backed by 26 tanks that "took up position to split the town in two," activist Nureddin al-Abdo told AFP.

Residents cowered indoors as explosions rattled Saraqeb and troops swooped to make arrests, he said from the town where there is a considerable rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) presence.

One civilian and three soldiers died in Saraqeb, the Observatory said.

The army also used mortars to pound the town of Qalaat al-Madiq in the central province of Hama, which troops have been trying to seize for the past two weeks, added the Britain-based monitoring group.

Activists reported fierce overnight clashes between troops and mutineers in and around the capital, after a day of protests under the rallying cry "Damascus, here we come."

YouTube videos showed a huge night-time demonstration in the Kfar Sousa district and others in several parts of Syria's second city Aleppo in the north.

The deadly uprising that has gripped Syria for more than a year has largely spared Damascus, but in recent weeks violence has also rocked the capital.

province were "very violent" with explosions heard across the region and in the city itself, opposition activist Mohammed al-Shami told AFP.

Security forces also shot dead a civilian in southern Daraa province, where the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's regime first erupted in March 2011, said the Observatory.

Monitors estimate that at least 9,100 people have been killed in Syria over the past year in violence the regime blames on "armed terrorist groups."

Syria's fragmented opposition, meanwhile, announced a two-day meeting from Monday in Istanbul to define their objectives ahead of an April 1 conference of the "Friends of Syria" group there.

The talks aim to produce a "National Pact for a New Syria," said main opposition umbrella group the Syrian National Council, adding that the key objectives are to rid the country of the "regime's dictatorship."

Despite regime pledges of democratic reform, two activists appeared in court on Saturday accused of forming a secret organisation.

"The security forces brought Bahraa Abdel Nabi Hijazi and Anas Abdel Salam before the judges for forming a secret organisation and participating in protests hostile to the regime," human rights lawyer Michel Shammas told AFP.

Amnesty International says thousands of regime opponents have been arrested over the past year, and that many were believed to have been tortured or otherwise ill-treated.

UN-Arab League envoy to shore up vital backing from President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov amid signs of waning Moscow support for its Arab ally.

Annan will meet Russian officials on Sunday before visiting China on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both countries have twice vetoed UN Security Council resolutions aimed at condemning Assad.

Annan is carrying with him Assad's answer to a peace plan under which Syria could begin a "political transition" to a representative government, with no specifically defined role for the Syrian leader.

His visit comes days after Moscow backed a non-binding Security Council statement in support of the initiative after making sure it contained no implicit threat of further action should Assad fail to comply.

There are growing signs that Moscow is beginning to lose patience with Assad, despite his commitment to massive new Russian arms purchases and the granting of key naval access to the Mediterranean.

A top Kremlin-linked lawmaker said Assad should treat the UN statement as "an insistent recommendation" whose implementation would determine the future course of relations between the two countries.

"Assad has to take the first step: he must pull the Syrian army out of large cities," the lower house of parliament's foreign affairs chief Mikhail Margelov said on Thursday.

Russia sells billions of dollars in arms to Syria and analysts warn that Russian interests in Syria are too important for it to allow Western and regional powers to independently dictate the battle-scarred nation's fate.

The European Union on Friday slapped an assets freeze and travel ban on women in the Assad clan, notably his Britain-born wife Asma.

"We are gratified that the EU has taken yet another step in tightening the noose on the Assad regime," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
