The boys are bad: Older male ants single out younger rivals for death squad

Friday, June 15, 2012

Male Cardiocondyla obscurior ants are diphenic (either winged or wingless). New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Ecology demonstrates that the dominant wingless (ergatoid) male is able to identify potential rivals before they emerge from their pupae. Constant patrolling of the nest ensures that this male is able to bite or chemically tag rivals as soon as they emerge from their pupae. Chemically tagged ants are quickly destroyed by workers.

When ants emerge from their pupae (eclosion) they are vulnerable to attack because their exoskeleton has not yet hardened to protect them and their mandibles are also too weak to bite an attacker. Researchers from University of Regensburg and IST Austria investigated the behaviour of male ergatoid C. obscurior ants in response to newly pupated males and females as well as their interaction with developing pupae.

It would be advantageous for newly emerged males to hide from attackers. However, while winged males use chemical female mimicry to avoid being detected, young ergatoid males are easily detected and attacked by older males. If the fight occurs during the first day after eclosion the older male will always win but once the younger male's exoskeleton hardens his chances of surviving rises to 14%. Nearly 50% of fights between older and two-day old males results in the death of both combatants.

In addition to biting the males also smeared each other with secretions from their anuses which encouraged worker aggression. The older males were more likely to chemically tag two-day olds than younger rivals (presumably recognising that they needed help to win the fight) however since both males end up being tagged they both suffer worker attacks. The winners of these fights smear more and are attacked less by workers. So although this tactic overall may provide an 'edge' it is a risky strategy.

Dr Sylvia Cremer, from IST Austria, who led this project commented, "Older ergatoid male ants are able to distinguish pupae containing females by their chemical scent from those containing males. Pupae containing males are often bitten while those containing females (or winged males disguised as females) elicit a mating response. However the chances of mistakenly killing a female or worker possibly prevents older males from attempting to completely destroy all rival males before they emerge from their pupae."

C. obscurior ants produce sexual females and ergatoid males throughout the year. In terms of colony survival this ensures that if the old dominant male dies there is a new male ready to replace him. The cost of producing a constant supply of ergatoid males is low compared to the cost of producing unfertilised females, and any killed males are recycled as food for the larvae.

The Guy Who Might Sell His Company To ... - Business Insider

"Let him eat cake."

That's how the invitation reads to Yammer CEO David Sacks's ridiculous, over-the-top party in the $125 million Fleur de Lys mansion in LA this weekend.

It's an obvious reference to Marie Antoinette's famous utterance, "Let them eat cake," in case you missed it, about unruly French peasants.

Sacks, the former COO of PayPal, has a lot of reasons to celebrate. It's his 40th birthday and 5th wedding anniversary rolled into one. If he clinches a big deal to sell his company to Microsoft, he'll have one more reason.

We've also confirmed that several members of the PayPal Mafia?the tight-knit circle of former PayPal executives and employees who went on to start or work at companies like Yelp, Slide, and, yes, Sacks's Yammer?are invited.

Also attending: PandoDaily editor Sarah Lacy, who mentioned the party as she?issued a public plea to Sacks not to sell his company.

"I have an 18th-century costume on a hanger at home to prove it," Lacy wrote.

We just called Costumes On Haight, a popular costume store in San Francisco, and asked if they had any 18th-century French outfits left. (Full disclosure: We recently rented a French prerevolutionary getup at the store for a similarly themed event, though it was a divey bar on Polk Street in San Francisco, not an LA mansion.)?

"We're wiped out," a woman told us. "People have been calling for weeks."

One thing is clear: Silicon Valley is awash with money, while the rest of?the world writhes in economic turmoil.

Will the Marie Antoinette theme strike people as tone-deaf?

Here's the thing: From what we know of Sacks?or any of his invited guests?we doubt they care.

UPDATE: Sacks tweeted to correct our sources' recollection of the invitation they'd seen: "It's 'let *him* eat cake' not them. It's a birthday party. Get it?" We get it, David. Apologies for the error.

Microsoft Windows 8 tablet unveiling said to be slated for Monday

Microsoft Windows 8 Tablet Launch

Windows fans who have enviously watched iOS and Android users toting around tablets won?t have to wait much longer. Microsoft sent out a press invitation on Thursday for a ?major announcement? slated to take place in Los Angeles on Monday, June 18th, and All Things D?is reporting that it will center around Windows RT-based tablets. According to All Things D, Microsoft is expected not just to show off its ARM-based Windows 8 tablets at the event but also to ?highlight some of the kinds of programs and services that will run on the products, according to sources outside the company.? Having tablets in the fold would be a much-needed boost for Microsoft?s mobility brand, especially since Nokia, the company?s major Windows Phone manufacturer, is in such dire straits.?

Car accident dos and don'ts

Posted 18 hours ago

Being in a car accident can be overwhelming and confusing, but knowing what to do can help alleviate some of the stress.

"Being in a car accident is an unnerving experience so it's easy to lose focus in the moments afterward," says Tim Bzowey, vice president, Home and Auto, RBC Insurance. "However, if prepared, drivers can avoid making harmful and expensive decisions immediately following a collision."

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you're ever in a car accident:

Do:

Stay calm, keep yourself and others safe, if you can't get out of your car turn on your hazard lights, if anyone is injured call 911.

Call your insurance company right away, let a trained insurance professional handle all the details for you.

Exchange information with the other drivers involved, such as their names, addresses, phone numbers, license information, insurance company and policy number.

Obtain the contact information of any witnesses who are at the scene.

Take photographs of the accident, such as car damage and road conditions.

Don't:

Move anyone who is injured. You should wait for medical help to arrive.

Leave the scene of the accident.

Accept a direct offer of payment of damage from the other driver. Settling for direct payment may not be as advantageous as it seems. If you're not at fault, the accident won't affect your driving record nor will you have to pay a deductible.

Sign any documents other than the police report.

Authorize repairs immediately. Your insurance adjuster may refer you to a repair facility where the repair comes with a guarantee.

Variations in microRNA expression can lead to sampling bias, according to new study published in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics

Philadelphia, PA, June 15, 2012 Certain short strands of RNA, known as microRNAs (miRNAs), have been linked to the progression and metastasis of breast cancer and may provide information about prognosis. However, studies of miRNA expression profiles often report conflicting findings. While the potential for using miRNAs in breast cancer diagnosis is promising, scientists report in a new study published online today in The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics that differences in the amount and types of miRNA within breast tumors can be misleading.

"Personalized medicine will be the future of cancer care," explains lead investigator Stefanie Avril, MD, of the Technical University of Munich. "However, taking a single tumor biopsy for defining individual treatment is probably oversimplified, and we need to take into account the heterogeneity of tumors. "We found considerable differences in the expression of miRNAs associated with breast cancer within a single tumor (referred to as intratumoral heterogeneity). The use of miRNA for diagnosis or prognosis requires sampling at several different tumor locations and of several tumor-involved lymph nodes."

Researchers collected 132 tumor samples from 16 patients who underwent either lumpectomy or mastectomy for large primary invasive breast cancer. Samples were taken from defined tumor zones: the center of the tumor, the periphery, and the area between. Samples were also taken from lymph nodes, if metastases were present. The expression of four miRNAs (miR-31, miR-335, miR-10b, and miR-210) and four control genes (let-7a, miR-16, RNU48, and RNU44) was assessed.

The researchers found significant variation in miRNA expression, from samples both within primary breast cancers and within lymph node metastases from the same patient. The extent of heterogeneity was very similar within the defined tumor zones and between different zones.

To illustrate why intratumoral heterogeneity may produce misleading results if only a single sample is used, the researchers assessed the variation of miRNA expression between different patients. The mean expression of miR31, which is associated with cancer metastasis, from all zones of the primary tumor site in patient 5 was significantly lower than the mean expression from all zones of the primary tumor site of patient 6. However, a sample from a single tumor zone from patient 5 showed a higher expression level than the lowest case from patient 6. "This might in part explain conflicting previous findings regarding miRNA expression profiles," Dr. Avril notes.

"An important strength of this study is the systematic and predefined prospective sampling of tumors in 8 to 10 different areas, whereas previous studies have commonly only analyzed different areas of one tumor section, or core biopsies of the same tumor," says Dr. Avril. "Reliable assessment of breast cancer miRNA profiles should include sampling of the primary tumor in several locations or sampling several tumor-involved lymph nodes when deriving miRNA expression profiles from metastases."

Northeast Texas Children's Museum offers summer fun

From NE Texas Children's Museum:

What is a child to do during summer while school is not in session? This year children will be offered many learning opportunities while they have fun at the local Northeast Texas Children?s Museum. Fun Fridays will be repeated again this year. Regular Museum admission will be the price for these events. These programs will begin at 11:00 a.m.

On June 15, Indiana Smith presents ?Arrows over Texas?. He has collected fossils and Indian artifacts since 1978. A portion of his collection will be available for children to see. This program will help young children gain a better understanding of the past in Northeast Texas.

Although not on a Friday, children will be fascinated by Wyman Williams? presentation of mathematics in history. Williams will present his program, Renaissance Math, on Saturday, June 16. Children will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of math in both the ancient and modern world.

The Venus Transit and Hunting For Alien Worlds

astroengine writes "Forget simply detecting a slight 'dip' in brightness as an exoplanet transits in front of its star; soon we'll be able to image the event. What's more, by doing this we'll see that exoplanetary transits look exactly like the historic Venus transit that wowed the world on Tuesday. This is according to astronomer Gerard van Belle, of Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Ariz., who hopes to use an interferometer to carry out the mind-blowing goal of capturing the silhouettes of exoplanets drifting in front of distant stars. But that's not all: this whole effort may help us track down the first bona fide Earth-like alien world." In case you missed it, NASA posted a bunch of great footage and pictures of the Venus transit, as did Boston.com's The Big Picture. Phil Plait pointed out a cool shot from Thierry Legault of a transit during a transit.

Debt Crisis: Spain expected to ask for bank bailout over the weekend

SPAIN is expected to request European aid for its ailing banks at the weekend to forestall worsening market turmoil, becoming the fourth and biggest country to seek assistance since the euro zone's debt crisis began, EU and German sources said.

Two senior EU officials said finance ministers of the 17-nation single currency area would hold a conference call on Saturday to discuss a Spanish request for an aid package, although no figure had yet been set.

The Eurogroup would issue a statement after the meeting, they said.

"The announcement is expected for Saturday afternoon," one of the EU officials said.

The move comes after Fitch Ratings slashed Madrid's sovereign credit rating by three notches to BBB from A on Thursday, highlighting Spain's exposure to its banks' bad property loans and to contagion from Greece's debt crisis.

"The government of Spain has realised the seriousness of their problem," a senior German official said.

He added that an agreement had to be reached before a Greek general election on June 17 which could lead to Athens leaving the euro zone if parties opposed to the terms of an EU/IMF bailout win.

There was no immediate official comment from the Spanish government.

The EU and German sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Fitch said the cost to the Spanish state of recapitalising banks stricken by the bursting of a real estate bubble, recession and mass unemployment could be between ?60bn and ?100bn.

An International Monetary Fund report, due to be published on Monday, is expected to estimate Spanish banks' capital needs at a lower figure of ?40bn, but market conditions have deteriorated since that data was collected, officials said.

European shares and the euro fell on Friday amid mounting concern over Spain following the Fitch downgrade.

While Spain would join Greece, Ireland and Portugal in receiving a European bailout, officials said the aid would be focused only on its banking sector, without taking the Spanish state off the credit markets.

Any political conditions would be light, related to the banks and would probably not add to the austerity measures and structural economic reforms which Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government has already put in place, EU and German sources said.

The European Commission and EU paymaster Germany both agreed in principle last week that Spain should be given an extra year to bring its budget deficit down below the EU limit of 3pc of gross domestic product because of a deep recession.

Meanwhile, a Spanish government spokeswoman said she was not aware of any pending announcement on a bank rescue over the weekend.

The spokeswoman referred to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's comments on Thursday that he would wait to see the results of independent audits of the country's banking system before talking with Europe over the best course of action to recapitalise the banking system.

(AP) ? World stock markets fell Friday, deflated after U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gave no hint of immediate action to jump-start growth in the world's No. 1 economy. Markets were also bracing for the possibility of glum economic data from China over the weekend.

Bernanke avoided sending any signals in an appearance before members of the U.S. Congress about what the Fed might do in response to a slowdown in hiring. The 69,000 jobs created in May was the fewest in a year.

Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong, said markets were "slightly disappointed" that Bernanke had not said the Fed would extend its Treasury bond-buying program, known as quantitative easing. The program injects money into the financial system, lowering interest rates to spur lending and growth.

An effort by China on Thursday to reverse a sharp economic downturn with a surprise cut to a benchmark lending rate failed to rejuvenate markets because it may have been too little, Lun said.

"The economy is slowing much faster than people expected," he said.

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 dropped 1 percent to 5,394.44. Germany's DAX lost 1.3 percent to 6,063.96 and France's CAC-40 fell 1.6 percent to 3,023.37.

U.S. futures augured a lower open on Wall Street. Dow Jones industrial futures fell 0.7 percent to 12,316 and S&P 500 futures lost 0.8 percent at 1,299.60.

The losses echoed those in Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 2.1 percent to close at 8,459.26. South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.7 percent to 1,835.64.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 1.1 percent to 4,063.70. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.9 percent to 18,502.34. Benchmarks in mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Zealand also fell.

Aside from an interest rate cut, China's central bank also said Thursday that commercial banks would be allowed to pay higher deposit rates than those dictated by the government. That could help to shift money to households from China's hugely profitable government-owned banks.

Analysts said the moves suggest May trade and economic data due to be released in the next few days could be unexpectedly weak, spurring authorities to take more urgent action.

China has rolled out a series of measures to stimulate the economy after growth fell to a nearly three-year low of 8.1 percent in the first quarter and April factory output grew at its slowest rate since the 2008 crisis. Private sector analysts expect this quarter's growth to fall further.

Andrew Sullivan of Piper Jaffray Asia in Hong Kong said in a commentary that investor concerns remained focused on Europe ? where a lingering financial crisis has now infected Spain and its banks.

Global investors are worried that the recession-hit country can't come up with the money needed to save its banks without bankrupting the government. Expectations are rising that Spain's leaders will have to seek an international bailout for banks swaying under the weight of bad real estate loans.

Spain's borrowing costs have soared close to the level that forced the governments of Greece, Portugal and Ireland to seek financial rescues. As much as 100 billion euros ($126 billion) may be needed to bolster Spanish banks, the credit rating agency Fitch said Thursday.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down $2.59 to $82.24 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 20 cents to finish at $84.82 per barrel in New York.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2462 from $1.2601 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 79.18 yen from 79.68 yen.

Suicide bombers kill 22 civilians at Afghan market

(AP) ? Three suicide attackers blew themselves up in the largest city in southern Afghanistan Wednesday, leaving 22 people dead in a dusty marketplace that was turned into a gruesome scene of blood and bodies, authorities said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in Kandahar that injured an estimated 50 civilians.

The explosion occurred about five kilometers (three miles) from the main gate of the massive military installation run by the U.S.-led coalition and roughly 500 meters (yards) from an Afghan military base.

One suicide bomber detonated a three-wheeled motorbike filled with explosives first, said Rahmatullah Atrafi, deputy police chief in Kandahar province. Then, as people rushed to assist the casualties, two other suicide bombers on foot walked up to the site and blew themselves up, he said.

Eight private security guards were among the 22 killed along a main road on the east side of the city, he said.

Small shops and private security company offices line one side of the road. Large trucks that supply logistics to Kandahar Air Field regularly park along the other side.

The explosions left a bloody scene of body parts, shoes, soda cans, snacks and debris from three shops that were destroyed.

Mohammad Naeem, a 30-year-old shopkeeper, said he was selling soft drinks to a customer when the first blast occurred.

"I dropped to the ground," he said. "When I got up, I looked outside and I heard people shouting for help."

Naeem said he helped his customer, who was wounded, into his shop.

"He was bleeding. I put cloth on his wound to stop the bleeding," he said. "I was busy with that when the other blasts occurred."

Islam Zada, a truck driver, was on the other side of the road having tea near his parked truck when the attack began.

"I couldn't see anything except for fire and dust," Zada said of the scene. "I found a wounded truck driver on our side of the road and went to help him," Zada said. "We gave him some water and when we were talking to him the other blasts occurred."

Chris Rock's 'Madagascar 3' song a YouTube hit

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

The tune's as annoyingly addictive as "It's a Small World," but not everyone?recognizes the?voice behind it. That's comedian Chris Rock as the zebra Marty in the trailer for "Madagascar 3: Escape to Europe," wearing a rainbow wig and?belting out?the oh-so-catchy "Circus! Afro! Circus! Afro! Polka dot, polka dot, polka dot, Afro!"

But when TODAY's Ann Curry?noted that?the song had earned 750,000 hits on YouTube, Rock pointed out the obvious: "Isn't it a shame YouTube pays nothin'?" he said.

Curry pointed out with a laugh that his song was making people smile, to which Rock responded, "Pays me in smiles.? ... I can starve on smiles."

Curry also asked Rock what animal he could be if he could choose anything. After considering the lion ("king of the jungle and all that") and the snake ("scare people, sssssss!"), Rock decided he'd stick with Marty the zebra, joking that it was "in honor of our zebra president, black and white, white and black."

"I love our president, you know, but he's black and white,?he appeals to all," Rock said. "That's what I'm going for."

Rock later joined the TODAY anchors and a certain happy red Muppet named Elmo on the couch for a rollicking and freespirited?discussion -- and couldn't resist getting in a joke at the expense of singer Chris Brown, who'll be on TODAY Friday. "I hope the weather doesn't smack us upside the head tomorrow," Rock announced.

Elmo then took the discussion in a more wholesome direction, urging fans to "like" his Facebook page campaigning for him to carry the Olympic torch (a cardboard version -- 3-year-olds can't handle real fire).

The Muppet then asked Rock to explain what "viral" meant in "viral video," but Rock had a different definition in mind. "Elmo, you can go, but you can't sit in the seat." And later, when Elmo planted a smooch on the cheek of anchor Matt Lauer, Rock warned him to be careful, "You might catch something viral."

"Madagascar 3: Escape to Europe" opens on June 8. Elmo says he'll be there.

Analysis: Pan-African airline dream faces tough take-off

DAKAR (Reuters) - Gervais Djondo is a man with a dream.

The former industry minister of the west African state of Togo has set himself a mission to create a pan-African airline serving the continent, an elusive goal since a previous venture, Air Afrique, collapsed under a pile of debt in 2002.

Africa's aviation market is set to soar in the coming years, powered by the resource-rich continent's robust economic growth and burgeoning consumer market, which are multiplying business and leisure travel. Big airline manufacturers are eyeing potentially buoyant orders, as Africans increasingly turn to air travel.

Inspired by the memory of Air Afrique - a once proud name in post-independence Africa that combined the resources of a dozen or so former French colonies - Djondo has set up a privately financed Togo-based airline, ASKY, which made its first flight in 2010 and now flies to 17 countries in Africa.

"The plan in the short to medium term is to develop a strong airline for ... Africa in general, in an environment characterized by a multiplicity of small companies that appear and disappear within a few years," Djondo told Reuters.

But the challenge facing him and other African aviation entrepreneurs is how to make headway in a tough and unforgiving market, where a jostling herd of small national flag carriers and private companies struggle to compete with global airline giants that control 70 percent of air traffic to the continent.

"It is a savagely competitive business, especially on the supply side, so small is generally not good," said Mark Tierney, CEO of Dublin-based Crabtree Capital, which specializes in aviation and corporate finance services.

This means most African airlines lack economies of scale, face high unit costs and do not have adequate access to funding to finance fleet operations, Tierney added.

Djondo and others believe the way forward is for African carriers, instead of trying to compete with each other and jealously guard their national markets, to combine their resources and create a consolidated service or network.

This is the only way they can hope to take on the airline majors from Europe and North America, and increasingly Asia and the Middle East, which are using their reach and muscle to dominate African skies at the expense of local carriers.

"African airlines companies would benefit if they pool their fleets to create a large group with substantial resources and a significant market share to compete with the European giants," said Abidjan-based regional aviation analyst Moussa Diabate.

"The future is in consolidation," he said.

Djondo pointed to the examples of South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenyan Airways, which have successfully expanded their presence on the continent and further afield, especially Kenyan Airways, through its partnership with Air France-KLM.

"Why would we not do the same in west and central Africa, with maybe two strong companies which cover Africa and international routes?" Djondo said.

FRAGMENTED MARKET, SAFETY ISSUES

But this is a difficult message to preach on an immensely diverse continent of more than 50 nations, where, since the demise of Air Afrique, most countries still prefer to have their own flag carrier out of national pride.

An agreement reached some two decades ago to liberalize African skies, known as the Yamoussoukro Decision, has not prospered because most nations guard their airspace to protect their national carriers. Even if they do not have one, they do so in the hope that one day they will.

This means that Djondo's Togo-based ASKY, whose fleet of five aircraft operates about 154 weekly flights in Africa carrying 8,000 passengers a week, finds it tough to make headway in a very fragmented market where it is mostly seen as a direct competitor rather than a partner.

In west and central Africa, it is already competing with Cameroon's newly relaunched national carrier Camair Co, Senegal Airlines, the Celestair group comprising Air Mali, Air Uganda and Air Burkina Faso, Nigeria's Arik and Air Nigeria.

Ivory Coast's relaunched Air Cote D'Ivoire intends to join the fray in July, partnering with Celestair group. But some feel this may be a quixotic exercise that will struggle to succeed.

"The fact that each country is trying to create its own airline is not the right approach because African states do not have the means to maintain a functioning airline," said a technical advisor at the Ivorian transport ministry, who spoke on condition that his name not be published.

He said most African airline initiatives had average lifespans of only three to five years.

"Most of the time, they are blacklisted and cannot fly to Europe, thus doomed to fail because they cannot make money on domestic or regional routes only," the official said.

Safety concerns remain a challenge for Africa, highlighted most recently by the crash of a Nigerian Dana Air passenger jet in Lagos on Sunday, with the loss of all 153 people on board. It was Nigeria's worst air disaster in 20 years.

African air companies top the list by far of air carriers banned within the European Union.

Although the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says Africa saw an improvement from 2010 to 2011, the continent's accident rate is still the worst in the world.

PLANE-MAKERS SEE RISING ORDERS

"The problems of Africa are complex and include both insufficient government oversight and lack of infrastructure investment," IATA's Director General and CEO Tony Tyler said in March, when he announced the industry's global accident rate in 2011 for Western-built jets was the lowest in aviation history.

But the potential of the African market is not in doubt. IATA has forecast Africa's total air traffic to grow by 7.3 percent in 2012 and stay over the 6 percent yearly growth range through to 2015, slightly above world average.

Africa is a treasure trove of the world's most prized resources, including gold, platinum, iron, oil, cocoa and timber, and this is attracting investments which in turn are galvanizing business and boosting air travel.

The world's plane-makers have the continent on their radar.

In its long-term market outlook for 2011-2030, Boeing forecast the total African airlines fleet will nearly double to 1,210 from 680 in the period, with about 64 percent of those new purchases being new planes worth about $100 billion.

"Africans are turning increasingly to air travel, as road and rail infrastructure remains underdeveloped," Boeing said in its forecast. "The resulting boost in demand for airplanes has generated firm orders ... and created a favorable climate for aircraft leasing companies."

European rival Airbus agrees, saying Africa will see 1,101 new passenger aircraft deliveries in the 2011-2030 period, representing a 4 percent share of world deliveries.

JOSTLING FOR A SHARE

With an eye on Africa's healthy growth, some international airlines are also ramping up their service to the continent.

Air France-KLM, the leading European carrier flying to Africa, said in March it planned to increase its available seat kilometers (ASK) - which airlines use to measure passenger carrying capacity - to the continent by 5.4 percent this summer, servicing over 40 destinations.

Brussels Airlines, part of Germany's Lufthansa group, has increased the number of flights to African destinations this year from 14 to 21.

In addition, several Middle Eastern and Asian carriers such as Emirates , Etihad, Cathay Pacific and Turkish Airlines now fly to the continent, as do China Southern, China Eastern, and Hainan Airlines, which all have plans to expand there, the African Airlines Association said in a report.

In contrast, Cameroon's newly relaunched national carrier, Camair Co, posted a 9 billion CFA franc ($17.15 million) loss in its first year of operation, which its CEO Alex van Elk attributed to difficulties in regaining passenger confidence amid the fierce competition from international carriers.

Djondo is determined to grab a piece of this African market and believes keeping his ASKY airline in private hands and mostly financed by the private sector is one of the ways to avoid the government interference and lack of financing that eventually knocked Air Afrique out of the skies in 2002.

Air Afrique was a partnership between Air France and about a dozen former French colonies in west and central Africa.

Djondo's group has raised an initial $120 million capital mostly through the private sector, with the participation of pan-African bank Ecobank , the West African Development Bank, investment arm of the regional central bank, and Ethiopian Airlines , which holds a 40 percent stake in ASKY.

"Our ambition remains unchanged," he said. "To establish a strong African airline company owned by Africans."
