University of Florida removing Hernandez brick, photos

In the wake of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez being arrested and charged with murder, the University of Florida is doing its best to pretend Hernandez never existed there.

The former Gators star's photographs have been removed from the football facility.

Today, the team plans to dig up and remove a brick outside the stadium that honored the former All-American.

At Florida, Hernandez won the Mackey Award as the top tight end in the nation.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame took out an award-winning photo of Hernandez, who remains in jail without bail.

"We didn't feel it was appropriate to celebrate Aaron Hernandez," the school said in a statement. "We put together an immediate plan after the initial news broke to remove his likeness and name in various private and public areas in the facility, such as the South Endzone team area, locker room, football offices, Heavener Complex Kornblau Lobby and the brick display entrance to the football facility."

"We were able to implement some of the changes immediately and this [brick removal] was a more complex process to complete with our vendors. The plan was to have everything completed before the end of July."

SAC indictment describes 'insider trading group' at Citadel: sources

By Emily Flitter and Katya Wachtel

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former employee of SAC Capital Advisors' Chicago office was once part of an "insider trading group" at a rival hedge fund, according to an indictment filed on Thursday against SAC.

A source familiar with the matter said the hedge fund was Citadel. A Citadel spokeswoman said there was no such "insider trading group" at the firm.

Charges filed in U.S. District Court in New York on Thursday against prominent hedge fund manger Steven A. Cohen's SAC Capital said his former employee, Richard Lee, moved from a firm, identified only as "Hedge Fund A" to SAC, despite a warning that Lee "was known for being part of Hedge Fund A's 'insider trading group.'"

The source familiar with the matter said "Hedge Fund A" is Citadel, the Chicago-based firm founded by Kenneth Griffin. Citadel managed roughly $13.3 billion at the end of 2012, according to a regulatory filing. Citadel was one of several hedge funds subpoenaed by federal authorities in 2010 as part of the government's broader insider trading investigation.

Lee worked at Citadel from 2006 until he was fired in 2008, according to a spokeswoman for the firm. The spokeswoman, Katie Spring, said Lee worked as a team member in a merger arbitrage group known as Principal Strategies, which was shuttered as a result of the financial crisis.

"There is no insider trading group at Citadel," Spring said in response to that characterization in court documents.

Spring said Lee's termination was for a violation of firm policy as he was in transition to take over the Principal Strategies team, but was "unrelated to anything about insider trading."

Lee agreed this week to plead guilty to securities fraud charges and to cooperate with government investigators.

A spokesman for SAC Capital was not immediately available to comment on Thursday.

According to court papers filed in Lee's case, federal investigators said he obtained inside information about several stocks while at SAC including Yahoo, which he traded ahead of the technology company's earnings release and the announcement of a planned corporate partnership.

Citadel and SAC have engaged in a rivalry that has included attempts to poach each others' best employees. SAC had a small office in Chicago with four teams of portfolio managers and analysts, but closed it at the end of 2012, citing cost-cutting measures and poor performance.

Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan's pen pal program

Those who think letter writing is a lost art should talk to Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan.

Letters, waxing poetically about all that Fall River has to offer, have seemingly become a key strategy in Flanagan?s economic development attempts, recruiting everything from giants in the computer world to a soccer team. Just take a look at the list of those to receive a Flanagan pen pal correspondence: Google, Amazon, New England Patriots and Revolution owner Robert Kraft, Hess and recently Market Basket. While it wasn?t released to the public, Flanagan said Tuesday his campaign has grown to include the Wegman?s supermarket chain in an attempt to find a new tenant for the former South End Shaw?s market.

It?s an impressive list for sure, but no one is writing back. Is Google, Amazon or the New England Revolution coming? Is the Hess property along the Taunton River any closer to redevelopment? I?ll give the Market Basket/Wegman?s attempts a pass at this time as the effort is still relatively new, though Flanagan said he has not had a response to the Market Basket inquiry.

Flanagan also noted the Demoulas family, owners of the Market Basket chain, are embroiled in an inter-family fight over the business, which may take away from expansion talks.

Flanagan said the letter writing campaign is meant to ?pique their interest,? while putting Fall River on the radar screen of these various companies. He expressed hope that these companies would have Google alerts that would notify them if the media picked up the story and referenced the company being named. He said the letters are followed up with phone calls.

But does the strategy work or is it really just for show?

Letters can easily be attached to an email and then sent en masse to the various media outlets, including The Herald News, covering Fall River. An audio file of a phone call that ends with a secretary taking down Flanagan?s name and number, however, isn?t going to lead to much hope or make it look as though Flanagan has much pull.

But while Flanagan has so far swung and missed with his letter writing attempts, don?t expect him to stop.

?You know you keep swinging and trying and hopefully it pays off,? Flanagan said.

ARE FLANAGAN?S LETTER WRITING EFFORTS WORTHWHILE? WHAT OTHER EFFORTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE FLANAGAN MAKE TO DRIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT? ?

Corporate Facilitation Specialists, Leadership Strategies, Share ...

NORCROSS, GA, July 15, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Strategic planning is a performance tool that helps a company remain organized and to more equitably use resources, time, and energy to accomplish goals. Strategic planning is helpful to businesses that are serious about growth. A strategic plan is basically the map designed to guide a company towards a goal. For example, if Company ABC wanted to add another store by the next fall season, it would be helpful to have a strategy in place that can hold all the people involved in the process to task.

Strategic planning is a formally documented process that lays out decisions that over time will lead to a profitable outcome and growth of the business. If there is a specific strategy in place, it makes it easier to address changes within the corporation that may affect the outcome of the process as they come along and to better see how the decisions will affect the corporate whole.

Corporate facilitation specialists can help businesses implement strategies that can meet the goals of the company. A project facilitator with the combined effort of others create a roadmap that can guide the company through a period of growth by giving a direction to areas such as marketing strategy, financial strategy, human resource strategy as well as organizational strategy.

The strategic plan is not designed to micro-manage all of the details of the process, but it is most effective when it comes to scale, time horizon, and the importance of the decisions that are to be made. A strategic plan should not be used to spell out the details of project planning, production planning, allocation of resources, or any other of the parts of the whole. Strategic planning gives overall direction.

A strategic planning facilitator sees that the strategic plan is designed around the long term goals of the corporation as a whole. "By using a certified professional facilitator to map out a corporate strategy that addresses the decisions that will be required to lead a corporation as a whole into a period of growth can help reduce roadblocks and create a pathway to success," states Kris Casariego, Director of Marketing at Leadership Strategies. For more information visit http://www.leadstrat.com.

Increasing profitability and being well-directed through periods of growth are important to a corporation's overall health. Facilitative leadership can bring managers and owners together to develop a precise plan of action to guide a corporation to further success.

Cancer, chemo led to veterans? lower risk of Alzheimer?s

Source: USA TODAY

The study of 3.5 million veterans found an inverse relationship between Alzheimer?s and all types of cancer except prostate and melanoma ? both of which are largely detected through screening rather than symptoms. Aggressive screening of veterans might find cancers that would not otherwise have caused problems, said researcher Jane Driver, in explaining why those cancers might not share the same relationship with Alzheimer?s.Military veterans diagnosed with most forms of cancer were less likely to develop Alzheimer?s disease, and those who were treated with chemotherapy received even more protection, according to a study released this morning at the Alzheimer?s Association International Conference in Boston.

Other research also supports this inverse relationship, including an Italian study released late last week, that found that those diagnosed with Alzheimer?s ran a 43% lower risk of developing cancer than those without the disease, and people with cancer had a 35% lower chance of developing Alzheimer?s. That study did not look as closely at individual cancers ? though it did find a weaker link with prostate cancer and melanoma ? or at treatment differences.

Driver said chemotherapy may offer extra protection because it reduces inflammation and may prevent brain cells from trying to divide. In Alzheimer?s, brain cells often try to divide when they shouldn?t, leading to their death, she said.

She said no one should take chemotherapy drugs, which are highly toxic, to reduce their risk of Alzheimer?s, but the link suggests that it may be possible to develop medications to address both diseases. Certain chemotherapy drugs may turn out to be more protective of the brain than others, she added, so it may make sense to prescribe them more often.

Another study released this morning showed that diabetics who take the drug Metformin seem to be better protected against Alzheimer?s than those taking other diabetes medications, including Sulfonylurea. Nearly 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, which is largely associated with lifestyle factors. Roughly half of those with diabetes develop Alzheimer?s as they age, so finding a drug that is also protective against Alzheimer?s is immensely important, said researcher Rachel Whitmer, an investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.

In her study of nearly 15,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, those who took Sulfonylurea had a 26% increased risk of developing Alzheimer?s compared to those on Metformin. Not all patients can tolerate Metformin, but Whitmer said more research should certainly be done to see if that drug should be the first-line treatment for diabetes.

Other research discussed at the conference this morning suggests that postponing retirement may protect against Alzheimer?s and other forms of dementia, likely because it keeps people intellectually engaged for longer; and that socioeconomic differences like education and income ? not lifestyle factors or health status ? may explain why African-Americans are more likely than whites to develop Alzheimer?s.

Find Out How To Gain Attention For Your Website - Internet ...

Any business can increase profits through good Internet marketing strategies. When you use the Internet to market your business, you can reach customers across the world. There are some tricks, however, to market your business more effectively. What follows are ways to maximize the effectiveness of your Online marketing strategy.

Pay attention to your competitors. Their strategies may help you refine your own, allowing you to better reach your customer base. When looking at a competitor?s website, put yourself in the shoes of a customer. If you would purchase their products, what about their marketing encourages you to do so? How can you incorporate some of these strategies into your own website?

You possess the skills needed to be successful in web marketing. Advanced software programs are not needed to be profitable. With plenty of thought and effort, you will work through your decisions and strategies when it comes to marketing.

Video marketing is a good way to get your business Internet exposure. Incorporating an informative video onto your website is a great method for gaining the attention of your viewers. Remember that you have to entice customers into watching the video in order to realize the benefit; a compelling title and an intriguing picture are important.

You must know your competition if you are to succeed with an online business. Compare the web pages of your competitors to garner ideas on things that may work for you too. If you see that your competition is not providing certain services on their websites, offer the same services on your site so that your customers will choose you over your competition.

If you can create an Ezine, it can be a great tool to get subscribers and market your company. You can experiment with adding photographs of your staff, customers, or even family. In addition, write some fun memories about your employees or family. Use of captivating words in your subject line, such as examples of easy, fast ways to attain their goals, will peak your customers interest.

Be sure to back up any claims about your business or products that you make with cold hard facts. For instance, if you say your product works great, people may or may not believe you. However, if you make a video showing how effective the product functions, you will be far more convincing. Real life videos and images can be a great boost to your Internet promotion campaign.

The above advice will enable you to improve your internet promotion efforts. Next, you should try them to see how well they work. Alterations may be in order to customize them to fit your own particular needs. Be bold in exploring new approaches and keep an open mind to progressive ways of thinking.

All Good Things

I still remember the comments on my welcome letter when I took over the site on a sunny day in early 2011. It was beautiful outside and here I was sweating bullets in a tiny NYC hotel room, watching the reaction in comments and elsewhere. Needless to say there was more than a little hate, but there was so much warmth and optimism and welcome it really powered me through what ultimately became a very long, very good day. That support carried me past more than two incredibly challenging, hugely rewarding years.

And so it's with heavy heart that I say that I'm stepping away. Those early days in 2011 were an incredible challenge, and if I'm frank it never really got any easier, with the dawn of new competition and an incredible evolution in the quality of tech journalism over the past few years. We've always had our work cut out for us at Engadget, and I'm hugely proud of how our team rose to the challenge, recently winning numerous awards for content, video and design and, most importantly, maintaining the respect of the Engadget brand.

It goes without saying that I had a great opportunity to shape Engadget and I always strove to turn it into a site that everyone, on both sides of the aisle, respected. Respect is the most important thing for me, and those who worked under me at Engadget have earned my eternal respect. I hope you'll give them the same. In the end, I look forward to reading all the comments that this post elicits. I won't be able to reply to them all, but do know that I am so incredibly thankful for your support over the years, even to the haters. Without your hard licks I, and the entire Engadget team, wouldn't have been as driven to exceed as we have always been.

As for me? Well, I don't have any specific plans for the moment, but let's just say I'm looking forward to taking a little break before dealing the next hand. The sky's the limit.

Burger Time Golf Tournament wraps up 20th year

LAS CRUCES - The Burger Time Golf Tournament, bringing people together since 1993.

The 20th Burger Time "Sandra B. McGrath" Golf Tournament concluded Saturday at Sonoma Ranch Golf Course. The final day was highlighted by a marriage proposal, a hole-in-one and the presence of former Mayfield football coach Jim Bradley.

Alfonso Montes, 38, and Denise Corrales, 27, have been dating for three years and have a three-month old child.

"It was her birthday this weekend and we had our baby on April 10 so I thought I would propose to her on the 10th hole," Montes said.

Montes placed the engagement ring in the hole on the 10th green, proposing after Corrales found the ring in the hole.

"He told me to come over to see something and I thought it was going to be a snake or something," Corrales said. "I was very surprised. I had no idea."

Henry Apodaca, Michael Burton, Ryan Hefley and Tony Aldo have played together in the Burger Time for 10 of the 20 years. Playing for Mac's Meats on Saturday, Apodaca notched his second hole-in-one of the summer on Saturday, knocking in an ace on the Par 3 third hole with an eight iron.

"We were all born and raised in Las Cruces and what (Burger Time owner) Kevin McGrath and his team has done is remarkable," Apodaca said. "It's a great community effort

and we have fun every year."

McGrath presented a check for $299,000 to Las Cruces Public Schools on Friday from this year's tournament. McGrath said nearly 550 players participated in this year's event.

Although he wasn't walking the course this year, Bradley's presence at Sonoma Ranch didn't go unnoticed.

"He has been out here three times this weekend," said McGrath of the New Mexico high school coaching legend. "He has been such an important part of this event. It is important for him to be out here and know that he's loved by the community."

As the Burger Time tournament has progressed, it has grown to involve all high school sports and activities, although it began as a fundraiser for the football programs at Mayfield High, Las Cruces High and O?ate.

All three football teams raise between $10,000 to $15,000 per year -- a fact not lost on the players who enjoy the benefits of the tournament in the fall.

"It helps us a lot for everything from food to the new gloves or shoes we get every season from freshmen all the way up to varsity," O?ate senior running back Isaiah Fielder said. "The $10,000 is a lot of money and been really important for our program. It's also fun being out here and talking to all of these people."

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? After a year and a half of living as a hermit, George Zimmerman emerged from a Florida courthouse a free man, cleared of all charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

His brother said the former neighborhood watch volunteer was still processing the reality that he wouldn't serve prison time for the killing, which Zimmerman, 29, has maintained was an act of self-defense. A jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder late Saturday night and declined to convict him on a lesser charge of manslaughter.

However, with many critics angry over his acquittal, his freedom will likely be limited.

"He's going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an interview on CNN.

Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed furious debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters across the country lashed out against police in the Orlando suburb of Sanford, outraged that it took 44 days for Zimmerman to be arrested. Many, including Martin's parents, claimed Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

Six anonymous female jurors ? all but one of them white ? considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night the 17-year-old was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

They deliberated more than 15 hours over two days before announcing late Saturday night that they had reached a verdict.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said in August 2012 that Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living "like a hermit" and were not working because they feared for their safety.

After Saturday's verdict, police, officials and civil rights leaders urged peace and told protesters not to resort to violence. While defense attorneys said they were thrilled with the outcome, O'Mara suggested Zimmerman's safety would be an ongoing concern.

"There still is a fringe element that wants revenge," O'Mara said. "They won't listen to a verdict of not guilty."

Those watching the case reacted strongly when the not-guilty verdict was announced. Martin's mother and father were not in the courtroom when the verdict was read; supporters of his family who had gathered outside yelled "No! No!" upon learning of the verdict.

Andrew Perkins, 55, a black resident of Sanford, angrily asked outside the courthouse: "How the hell did they find him not guilty?"

"He killed somebody and got away with murder," Perkins shouted, so angry he shook, looking in the direction of the courthouse. "He ain't getting no probation or nothing."

Trayvon Martin's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, said simply on Twitter: "Et tu America?" ? a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" known as an expression of betrayal.

Protesters had taken to the streets late Saturday and into Sunday morning in Florida, Atlanta and San Francisco, among other places. The demonstrators seemed to largely heed the advice of officials and others who urged them not to resort to violence.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump acknowledged the disappointment of Trayvon Martin's supporters, ranking the teen alongside civil rights heroes Medgar Evers and Emmett Till in the history of the fight for equal justice. However, he said, "for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful."

Martin's family maintained the teen was not the aggressor, and prosecutors suggested Martin was scared because he was being followed by a stranger. Defense attorneys, however, claimed Martin knocked Zimmerman down and was slamming the older man's head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman fired his gun.

Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him was a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.

State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."

"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.

Zimmerman also had some supporters outside the courthouse, including Cindy Lenzen, 50, of Casslebury, and her brother, 52-year-old Chris Bay, who stood watching others chant slogans such as, "the whole system's guilty."

Lenzen and Bay ? who are white ? called the entire case "a tragedy," especially for Zimmerman.

"It's a tragedy that he's going to suffer for the rest of his life," Bay said. "No one wins either way. This is going to be a recurring nightmare in his mind every night."

Before a special prosecutor assigned to the case ordered Zimmerman's arrest, thousands of protesters had gathered in Sanford, Miami, New York and elsewhere, many wearing hoodies like the one Martin had on the night he died. They also carried Skittles and a can of iced tea, items Martin had in his pocket. President Barack Obama weighed in, saying that if he had a son, "he'd look like Trayvon."

Despite the racially charged nature of the case, race was barely mentioned at the trial.

"This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms," Corey said. "We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries."

One of the few mentions of race came from witness Rachel Jeantel, the Miami teen who was talking to Martin by phone moments before he was shot. She testified that he described being followed by a "creepy-ass cracker" as he walked through the neighborhood.

Jeantel gave some of the trial's most riveting testimony. She said she overheard Martin demand, "What are you following me for?" and then yell, "Get off! Get off!" before his cellphone went dead.

The jurors had to sort out clashing testimony from 56 witnesses in all, including police, neighbors, friends and family members.

For example, witnesses who got fleeting glimpses of the fight in the darkness gave differing accounts of who was on top. And Martin's parents and Zimmerman's parents both claimed that the person heard screaming for help in the background of a neighbor's 911 call was their son. Numerous other relatives and friends weighed in, too, as the recording was played over and over in court. Zimmerman had cuts and scrapes on his face and the back of his head, but prosecutors suggested the injuries were not serious.

To secure a second-degree murder conviction, prosecutors had to convince the jury that Zimmerman acted with a "depraved" state of mind ? that is, with ill will, hatred or spite. Prosecutors said he demonstrated that when he muttered, "F------ punks. These a-------. They always get away" during a call to police as he watched Martin walk through his neighborhood.

To win a manslaughter conviction, prosecutors had to convince the jury only that Zimmerman killed without lawful justification.

The Myth of Marco Rubio?s Immigration Problem

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is losing altitude with some conservatives because he?s the Republican face of immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Yet he?ll have a lot of company in the 2016 field if he runs for the GOP presidential nomination.

In fact almost every Republican weighing a 2016 race ? from Jeb Bush and Chris Christie to Paul Ryan and Bobby Jindal ? favors some path to citizenship like the one in the comprehensive reform bill passed by the Senate, or is open to a variation of it.

?Any Republican with a national perspective understands the dynamics of the politics of the 21st century,? says GOP pollster Whit Ayres, a Rubio adviser. That is, the Hispanic share of the electorate is rising fast, and the GOP share of Hispanic votes keeps falling.

You wouldn?t think it given the resistance of the Republican-run House, but many polls show that most Republicans favor comprehensive reform that includes a path to citizenship, as long as it includes fines, waiting periods, and other conditions that amount to what Ayres calls ?penance? for being in the United States illegally.

Most polls over the past few years find one-quarter to one-third of Republicans will never support citizenship for illegal immigrants regardless of the state of security on the border or the conditions attached, Ayres says. By contrast, just in the last few days, a poll of 1,000 Republican primary voters for a pro-reform GOP group called Americans for a Conservative Direction found 65 percent favor a path to citizenship in combination with "substantially increased border security." A June 13-July 5 Gallup poll of 4,373 people showed that 83 percent of non-Hispanic white conservatives favor "allowing illegal immigrants to have the opportunity to become citizens."

While one poll ? a June 28-July 8 Quinnipiac poll of 2,014 people released Friday ? found somewhat less GOP support, it still showed 54 percent of Republicans backed either allowing eventual citizenship or allowing people to stay in the United States legally.

The evolution of public opinion and a dire political need for the GOP to start digging out of the hole it?s in with Hispanic and Asian voters are two of the reasons many Republicans with national ambitions are not shying away from citizenship and legalization issues.

Rubio brokered the Senate bill as part of the Gang of Eight, and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee who?is trying to work out a compromise in the House, said he expects the lower chamber to pass a bill with a citizenship path. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has expressed support for a path to citizenship as has Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, though Jindal opposed the Senate bill for other reasons. Christie, New Jersey? popular governor, supported a citizenship path in 2010, before it was popular in his party. Sen. Jeff Chiesa, the close associate Christie named to fill the seat when Democrat Frank Lautenberg died, voted for the Senate bill.

Florida?s former governor, Jeb Bush, has said he is open to a path to citizenship or legal status for undocumented immigrants while Texas Gov. Perry and Kentucky?s Paul also are open to what the senator calls ?normalizing their status,? depending on the state of border security.

Among the most hardline of the 2016 prospects is Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who has introduced amendments blocking a path to citizenship, calling it unfair to those who waited in line to arrive legally. Former Sen. Rick Santorum, a 2012 aspirant who says he is ?very open? to a 2016 race, told radio host Andrea Tantaro last month that there will be ?consequences? in the primaries for Rubio. He says the attitude among some Washington Republicans seems to be that ?the rule of law isn't that important,? that people who came the United States illegally will be treated the same as those who came legally.

While there are indications that Rubio?s role in the immigration debate isn?t helping him among Republicans, it?s way too early for polls to be relevant and in any case the damage for now appears minimal. For instance, a Rasmussen Reports automated poll in June found that Rubio?s favorability rating among Republicans nationally had dropped 15 points since February ? but it is still at 58 percent.

Opposition to immigration reform, particularly from the tea party wing of the GOP, is intense and vociferous but also misleading, given that two-thirds of Republicans support a path to citizenship if there are strict conditions that go along with it. House members, says Ayres, are ?reacting to what they hear from people who take the time to write, call and email their offices. There aren?t any Republicans that are going to write their congressman demanding a path to citizenship. It?s not the kind of thing that makes you charge the ramparts.?

Sal Russo, a Sacramento-based former Ronald Reagan aide who is co-founder and chief strategist of the Tea Party Express, says those who oppose a path to citizenship are fired up now and determined that undocumented immigrants should not be rewarded for violating the law. ?It?s an important principle, but of course, politics is about the realities of things,? Russo says. ?It?s a difficult thing for some people to swallow, but at the end of the day people think we have to fix the immigration system.?

Russo himself takes the long view, having been around in 1978, when Reagan opposed a ban on gay teachers in California, and 1994, when Jack Kemp opposed Proposition 187 denying social services to illegal immigrants. People predicted conservatives would never support either of them again ? ?so silly,? he says. He predicts the citizenship controversy ?won?t be a material factor? in 2016, especially if Congress takes immigration off the table by passing something, however imperfect.

Certainly hardline candidates will hold appeal to some GOP primary voters. But after two terms of President Obama, many Republicans will be looking for a general-election winner. Support of comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship, could well evolve into a proxy for inclusiveness, compassion, and the broad appeal that could finally put the party back in the White House.

Petrol bombs, bricks thrown in third night of N.Irish violence

    By Ian Graham

BELFAST (Reuters) - Rioters threw petrol bombs, bricks, bottles and fireworks at police in a third night of violence in Northern Ireland around traditional Protestant marches, wounding one officer early on Monday.

Protesters built a burning barricade across one road and burned out one car during the clashes that first flared on Friday following a dispute over a marching route.

Thousands of pro-British Protestants march every summer, a regular flashpoint for sectarian violence as Catholics, many of whom favour unification with Ireland, see the parades as a provocation.

A 1998 peace deal mostly ended decades of sectarian strife in the British province but trouble still breaks out, particularly around the Orange parades which mark a 1690 Protestant victory over a Catholic king.

Police said they had brought hundreds of reinforcements from Britain to cope with any more violence.

Both the Protestant Orange Order, which organizes the marches, and the devolved government, called for calm.

"It's very important that cool heads prevail in these circumstances and I hope people will obey the announcement and statement by the Orange Institution that people should desist from violence," said Peter Robinson, who heads the government.

Protestant marchers, unhappy because authorities ruled they could not walk along a stretch of road that divides the two communities, started throwing bricks and bottles at police on Friday.

The force responded with water cannon and rubber bullets.

Forty-four police officers have been wounded over the weekend and 49 people arrested, including one aged 10.

Special court sittings were held on Sunday to deal with 10 of those charged and most were remanded in custody.

The Art And Science Of YouTube Networks

video shootOver the last several years, we've seen a growing proliferation of multichannel networks (MCNs) pop up on YouTube, all of which are seeking to aggregate channels and audience in an effort to boost viewership and better monetize the videos that creators make. While the end goal -- more viewers, more money -- is the same for each of them, how they get to that place can differ significantly.

Best programming language for a beginner? - Computers, Math ...

First and foremost, it should be an object-oriented and turing complete language. The former because it makes the programming much more intuitive--the latter because it can be used on an intermediate and professional stage as well as a beginner stage. Three good choices are C++, C# and Java. In any case, TheNewBoston has great video tutorials explaining most of the stuff you need to know.

You might want to learn boolean algebra if you don't already know it, though. This is incredibly useful when you're programming.

Vine For Android Updated With New Camera tools And Widget

Vine is to video blogging, what Twitter is to micrblogging. With Vine, you have the opportunity to capture tiny little clips, to express yourself, just like Twitter allows you to with their tweets in 140 characters. Recently, Vine launched an update for their Android application, bringing a host of new features to the table, features which were quite needed by the app to stay ahead of the pack in the Android segment of the market.

The foremost update is an exclusive Android widget, which allows users to record video without having to open the app, the way most of the android users are used to. In addition to it, the video recording now has a grid displayed, which helps in aligning the shots. A ghost mode is also included that lets you play your previous recording transparently on top of your current one.A Revine button allows you to repost it a la retweet from Twitter. Another neat addition is the inclusion of a button to turn off auto-focus.

Overall, the additions are really thoughtful and should help Vine standout from the competition on the Android front.

The high paying banking jobs that nobody wants

    Pay

By Paul Clarke, 12 Jul 2013

Pay is, of course, becoming a lot more complex in the financial sector and investment banks are keen to build their internal compensation teams in order to meet the demands of both employees and regulators. There?s just one problem ? there are not enough people available.

Investment banks are slowly building their compensation teams in order to both navigate the tricky new regulatory environment and ensure that pay remains competitive relative to their peers. Banks employ specialists in deferred compensation, equity payments, international tax, and regulatory remuneration issues as well as those tasked with working out cash payments.

    Related articles:

The new stealth-cap on City bankers? pay:??425k

UBS has hiked some banker salaries in the?City

?Banks are building their compensation teams,? said Claire Hodgson, senior consultant for HR at recruiters Morgan McKinley. ?The main challenges banks face attracting talent is that there is currently a lack of candidates for compensation roles in the market. Attracting candidates for these roles is difficult as they?re not actively looking.?

These roles are surprisingly well-paid, considering that they sit in an HR function. One compensation consultant working for a Big Four firm, said that they pay ?a fraction of what people earn in the investment banks? for an equivalent role.

After three years? experience, ?60-80k is the normal salary range, he suggests, while a head of reward for a European bank should expect over ?250k and a head of deferred compensation can earn over ?150k. Across financial services, figures from Robert Walters suggest a ?100-200k average for a head of compensation and benefits and ?75-100k for a compensation and benefits manager.

Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley all have open roles in this area.

So, why are these people so hard to find? It?s not just a supply and demand issue: ?One problem is that people are pigeon-holed into particular specialism early in their career, which is not conducive longer term to offering the step up to a senior position with a more general compensation focus,? said the compensation consultant.?Banks are also likely to look externally for the more complex advice, which doesn?t make in-house staff feel overly-valued.?

Junior investment bankers in the front office burning the midnight oil may disagree, but it?s also something of a gruelling position to work in. It?s common to work at least 60 hours a week, and you can add another 20 as compensation cycles looms. ?It?s a hugely stressed and pressurised environment, which you can only remain in for so long,? said the compensation consultant. Therefore, people either go it alone, or move into a consultancy, he said.

Ironically, perhaps, in the past two years or so that the job has become much more interesting, with the regulators spicing up the complexity of the role by changing compensation within investment banking so much.

?Investment banks are having to extend their search beyond the sector ? consultancies are happy hunting grounds, but so are retail banks and insurance firms,? said the compensation expert.

Leah Durant And DC March For Jobs?Black Americans Not Happy That Obama Is Giving Away All Their Jobs To Foreigners

The DC March For Jobs is taking place on Monday. It's being run by Leah Durant and the Black American Leadership Alliance & Other Concerned American Citizens.

Their concern is what Amnesty will do to black Americans, since while the Obama Administration has provided jobs for some Americans in positions like Head Of The Justice Department, out in the larger community, all their jobs are being taken by illegal immigrants, and Amnesty will make this much worse.

Peter Brimelow wrote about this in Alien Nation, and in a 1996 article:

IT was the audience I had hoped to face since I began the stormy publicity tour for my book Alien Nation: Common Sense about America's Immigration Disaster: a roomful of liberals, gathered by the courageous Clarence Wood ?of the Chicago Human Relations Council, for a serious discussion of the impact of immigration on native-born blacks.

The audience, it turned out, had come only to denounce Peter for his

subjective, i.e., racist, motivations for raising this improper topic. After the usual brutal exchanges, they stomped off into the morning sunshine, raving and making signs against the evil eye. We sold only one book, to a stray Arab-American who had somehow wandered in.

Except for Clarence Wood, his daughter, and his assistant, the entire roomful of Brimelow-denouncing liberals was white.

Regulators send Hawaiian Electric back to the drawing board for renewable energy RFP

Hawaii regulators are instructing Hawaiian Electric Co. to bring more clarity and certainty in its draft request for proposals for 200 megawatts or more of renewable energy for Oahu, according to a filing on Thursday with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.

The PUC said that the current draft RFP should be updated to eliminate references to Castle & Cooke?s 200 megawatt Lanai wind farm project, which instead will be reviewed in a separate filing.

Additionally, solicitations for proposals for an undersea cable project will be removed from the existing draft RFP, the PUC said.

Instead, the PUC, in a separate filing, plans to investigate whether an undersea cable system to interconnect the Oahu and Maui electrical grids is in the public interest and if so, under what conditions such a grid-tie cable system should be developed, operated and regulated.

The current draft RFP has become overly complex and involves greater elements of uncertainty, and by giving each of the development segments ? potential renewable generation projects, a potential Oahu-Maui interisland undersea cable and a potential Lanai wind project ? a separate path for independent progress, the PUC said that it is looking to reduce the number of variables and complexity

Jeff Mikulina, executive director of the Honolulu-based nonprofit Blue Planet Foundation, said in a statement that ?this is an effort to shake the trees and identify the best available clean energy options for Hawaii.?

He pointed out that instead of requiring an energy developer to propose both a project and a transmission solution, the PUC is opening the door to a greater pool of possibilities.

    98% 20 Feet From Stardom

    All Critics (63) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (61) | Rotten (1)

The movie takes its cues from Standing in the Shadows of Motown, another act of pop-culture revisionism that tried to give musical credit where it was due.

Just about everything in this movie is right. And anybody who gives a rip about unsung heroines of popular music and giving credit when credit's overdue had better come up with a good excuse not to see it.

You may never hear the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter the same way again after hearing Jagger's and Clayton's separate accounts of the recording of the song.

The enthusiasm and love of music on display is just unavoidable. "20 Feet" may not get the whole story, but it gets some good ones.

Music documentarian Morgan Neville uses a mix of live interviews and archival footage to let the singers, and their music, tell their stories of vocal triumph and thwarted ambition.

You know all those doo-doo-doos and whoa-whoas-whoas you hear in pop hits? Without them, supplied by the likes of Darlene Love and Merry Clayton, you likely wouldn't be singing along to the songs you hear on your car radio.

This is a fascinating doc for pop, soul, R&B and rock fans, for it peels back the often unfair layers of the music business like the skins on an onion. Sometimes, it'll make you cry to witness how terribly these talents were treated.

It's important to finally put names and faces to the voices of these women because, without them, countless songs would sound horrible.

Neville's greatest strength is as a historian, able to sort through a wealth of details to find the pieces he needs to tell one clear, compelling story.

Salutes songs that wouldn't work without the back-ups and, in effect, turn us all into back-up singers.

Not the deepest documentary you're likely to come across this year -- in fact, it's not deep at all -- but it may well be the most enjoyable one.

The transcendent joy and agonizing heartbreak of making music - and trying to make it in music - have seldom been captured as vividly as in "20 Feet from Stardom."

If music has the power to connect, "Twenty Feet From Stardom" shows it's those backup voices making the connection.

Lovers of classic R&B and rock will never get tired of revisiting this movie and its bonanza of performance footage.

For once, the spotlight shines on these brilliant women who spent most of their careers on the outskirts of fame with minimal fortune to show for their efforts.

Jubilant, informative, and teeming with iconic music, 20 Feet from Stardom is a riveting sit, blasting a spotlight on singers worthy of the intense heat.

Following Fisher and Hill verit? style on their busy days freshens the nostalgia. . . Informative and entertaining, gives well-deserved r-e-s-p-e-c-t. No auto-tuning or dubs.

20 Feet from Stardom is a thorough--to the point of feeling a bit long--document on the craft.

This is one of those documentaries that you just wish could keep going.
