Banners and flags at the entrance to Eagle Heights, Tim Hopper?s neighborhood, told the story Thursday.

?Welcome home, Chief?

?We are so proud?

?Army strong, Hooha?

?I love a solder; my hero, my husband; CW4 Tim Hopper?

Hopper, commander of a Black Hawk helicopter unit for the Army National Guard in Salisbury, was returning home four months short of a one-year deployment to Iraq as U.S. troops pull out.

Similar scenes are playing out for dozens of families here as all Salisbury-based soldiers of Company C, 1st Battalion, 131st Aviation Regiment, have either returned to their homes or will do so by New Year?s Day.

?It feels great,? Hopper said after being greeted by family, friends and neighbors. ?It almost doesn?t seem real.?

His deployment in April involved some extra heartache because his wife, Mo, is battling a blood and bone marrow disease.

But now he?s back, and the neighborhood helped welcome him back, lining Windsor and Idlewild drives with banners and flags.

Mo said the homecoming celebration was Christmas, New Year?s, anniversary and birthday all rolled into one.

?It?s just been amazing,? she said.

Some of the signs greeting Hopper home said ?Kill Devils.? Company C is known by that name in honor of Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks ? site of the Wright Brothers? first flight in 1903.

Pilots in Hopper?s unit used its UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters to support the U.S. operation in Iraq.

?Our job was to transport the ranking officers in Iraq to wherever they needed to go,? Hopper said. That included Vice President Joe Biden, during his visit there.

The unit?s one-year deployment was shortened by President Obama?s announcement in October that all U.S. forces would depart Iraq by the end of the year.

Did Hopper believe it was time for the United States to pull out?

?You know, I don?t know ...,? he said. ?We were there to do our job no matter how long it would take.?

The unit, which has more than 80 soldiers, landed at Fort Hood on Dec. 24 to go through the demobilization process and started heading home as soon as they finished.

?We?re happy to have these soldiers home safe and with their families in time to ring in the new year,? said Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, adjutant general of North Carolina in a press release.

?They?ve done an outstanding job supporting critical operations throughout Iraq, particularly playing a key role in the safe and efficient drawdown of U.S. forces there.?

Hopper was deployed to Kuwait in 1998-99 and said he had a low-key homecoming at the end of that stint.

But the welcome-home fanfare for this deployment has been different, starting with the landing at Fort Hood. Senior officers from North Carolina greeted the troops and shook their hands as they got off the plane in Texas.

Families met the troops when they landed in Charlotte Thursday afternoon.

Then his wife and his neighborhood went all out to welcome him to Salisbury.

Hopper, who retired as a major after 12 years in the regular Army, plans to take 30 days off before returning to work maintaining aircraft as safety officer for the Army National Guard unit here.

He has been with the National Guard for 16 years.

This was the unit?s second deployment to Iraq. From Oct. 31, 2004, until Jan. 12, 2006, it supported Operation Iraqi Freedom. Twenty-eight of its members had deployed at least once before this most recent mobilization, and three had been called up two or more times.

The unit is part of the nearly 12,000 citizen-Soldiers and -Airmen who make up the North Carolina National Guard?s ready team.

Amazon marks 'best holiday' for Kindle devices, fills stockings full of cash

It was yet another solid year for Amazon's Kindle family of products. The mega online retailer sent out its yearly post-Christmas card, bragging about moving "well over one million Kindle devices per week" for December, making it the best holiday yet for the e-reader / tablet line, according to the company. Three Kindles held the top spots on the site's list of best sellers, led by the Fire, the Touch and the plain old fourth generation Kindle. No exact numbers from Amazon, as per usual, but it looks to have been a pretty green Christmas for Bezos and co. Jingle all the way to the celebratory press release after the jump.

Kevin Durant Buzzer-Beater Beats Mavericks (VIDEO)

Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant scored 30 points and hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the host Thunder to a 104-102 win over Dallas last night.

In a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals, OKC let Dallas erase a five-point deficit in the final 46 seconds, but moved to 4-0 on Durant's buzzer-beater.

Dirk Nowitzki had 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mavericks, whose title defense is off to an 0-3 start after this demoralizing shot by Durant:

Toledo holds off Air Force 42-41 in Military Bowl

Washington ? Even the youngest head coach in the country knows not to expect the conventional from Air Force. After all, the Falcons had already scored three fourth-down touchdowns, including the one that had just tied the Military Bowl with 52 seconds to play.

So 32-year-old Matt Campbell, with Toledo leading for the first time, wasn?t surprised when Air Force lined up to kick the extra point and then ran a fake, going for two to win the game instead of sending it to overtime.

The Rockets were ready.

Holder David Baska got bottled up trying to run the option. The ball squirted toward kicker Parker Herrington, who chased it until it went out of bounds in the end zone, and Toledo started celebrating its 42-41 victory Wednesday night at RFK Stadium.

"We talked about it, first and foremost, because they fake some extra points and fake some field goals," said Campbell, the Toledo offensive coordinator who was promoted this month to the head job after Tim Beckman left for Illinois. "Ironically, we were in the same situation last year in our bowl game. I give credit to our staff. We got ourselves into a defensive call. We were not in a ?block? look."

Toledo succeeded in taking a one-point lead with a 2-point conversion near the end of last year?s Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, but the Rockets lost the game to Florida International on a field goal on the game?s final play.

This time, the wild ending to a wild game went their way in the school?s first bowl win since 2005.

Bernard Reedy?s third touchdown of the game ? a 37-yard catch, spin and run on a pass from Terrance Owens ? gave Toledo a 42-35 lead with 5:01 remaining and put the Rockets (9-4) over the 40-point mark for a sixth straight game.

Story continues below

"We have 1,000 playmakers on our team," said Reedy, who had a career-high 126 yards receiving on four catches and was named the game?s MVP. "You never know who?s going to step up. It?s fun to watch everybody catch and run with it."

The game matched two of the top 25 scoring teams in the country, and they wasted little time living up to their reputations. It was Mid-American Conference member Toledo?s spread offense against Mountain West Air Force?s triple option, and the idea of a huddle seemed a quaint, antiquated concept.

Back and forth they went. A kickoff return for 87 yards. A pitch around the left end for 60. Touchdown passes for 49 and 37 yards. A pair of botched onside kicks.

And that was just the first half.

Toledo?s Adonis Thomas finished with 108 yards on 22 carries. Paul Hornung Award finalist Eric Page caught 13 passes for 59 yards, but his biggest play was an 87-yard kickoff return in the first half.

Owens, getting most of the work at quarterback, completed 19 of 24 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Owens got the nod over Austin Dantin, who started the first 10 games of the season before sitting out the last two with a concussion.

Tim Jefferson, the first quarterback in service academy history to lead his team to four consecutive bowl games, completed 13 of 22 passes for 159 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Air Force (7-6). Jonathan Warzeka had a career-best 60-yard run to set up one touchdown, and his 37-yard reception on fourth-and-3 tied the game 28-all heading into halftime.

There was even room for a defensive score: Toledo safety Jermaine Robinson?s 37-yard interception runback after he corralled a tipped pass deep in the secondary.

(AP Photo/ Lee Jin-man)

(AP) ? North Korea warned the world Friday there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government after Kim Jong Il's death as Pyongyang strengthened his son and heir's authority with a new title: Great Leader.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission said the country would never deal with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, a conservative who stopped a no-strings-attached aid policy toward the North in 2008.

The stern message also said North Korea was uniting around Kim Jong Un, referring to him for the first time with the title Great Leader ? previously used for his father ? in a clear message of continuity. It was the latest incremental step in a burgeoning personality cult around the son following the Dec. 17 death of Kim Jong Il.

The younger Kim on Thursday was pronounced Supreme Leader of the ruling party, military and people at a massive public gathering on the final day of official mourning for his father.

The top levels of government appear to have rallied around Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s, in the wake of his father's death. Still, given his inexperience and age, there are questions outside North Korea about his leadership of a nation engaged in delicate negotiations over its nuclear program and grappling with decades of economic hardship and chronic food shortages.

"We declare solemnly and confidently that the foolish politicians around the world, including the puppet group in South Korea, should not expect any change from us," the National Defense Commission said. "We will never deal with the traitor group of Lee Myung-bak."

In a combative voice, a female news anchor for state TV read the National Defense Commission statement, saying the "evil misdeeds" of the Lee administration reached a peak when it prevented South Koreans from visiting North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, except for two delegations led by a former first lady and a business leader, both of whose husbands had ties to North Korea.

North Korea had said foreign official delegations would not be allowed at the funeral but that it would welcome any South Koreans who wanted to travel to pay respects to Kim.

"Even though we lost Kim Jong Il, we have the dear respected Kim Jong Un," Kang Chol Bok, a 28-year-old officer of the Korean People's Internal Security Forces, told The Associated Press. "We will turn our profound sorrow into strength and courage."

In a newly released postage stamp, Kim Jong Un was featured alongside Kim Jong Il against the backdrop of sacred Mount Paektu, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said. It appeared to be the first time that the son has been featured on a postage stamp. North Korea has often depicted Kim Jong Il and his father, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, together in official artwork.

The North's statement is a warning for Seoul not to take the new leadership lightly, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University.

"It is also raising the stakes in case the South wants better relations so Pyongyang can extract greater concessions" during any later talks, Koh said. He added that it's "too early to say the North is dashing hopes for reforms."

While blasting the South's leader, the North also offered a bit of hope for improved ties with the South, saying it "will continue to push hard toward the path of improved relations."

But it added that any better ties won't be "based on the deceitful ploys South Korea is employing by mixing 'toughness' and 'flexibility.'" Seoul has signaled a change in its approach toward Pyongyang in recent months, saying it will be more flexible in dealing with the North.

South Korea's Unification Ministry will maintain its North Korea policy and not react to every statement out of Pyongyang, according to a ministry official who declined to be identified citing the sensitivity of the relations between the countries.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta spoke by phone with his South Korean counterpart and they agreed to keep close ties in the coming months, Pentagon press secretary George Little said.

Panetta and South Korean Minister of Defense Kim Kwan-jin discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula in the 20-minute call, Little said in a statement sent out late Thursday.

"The secretary and the minister shared the view that peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula is our overarching priority and agreed to maintain close cooperation and coordination in the weeks and months ahead," Little said.

On Thursday, Kim Jong Un stood with his head bowed at the Grand People's Study House, overlooking Kim Il Sung Square, as mourners gathered below. Top officials flanking him included Kim Jong Il's younger sister, Kim Kyong Hui, and her husband, Jang Song Thaek, who are expected to be mentors of their young nephew.

"The father's plan is being implemented," Ralph Cossa, president of Pacific Forum CSIS, a Hawaii-based think tank, said of the power transfer. "All of these guys have a vested interest in the system and a vested interest in demonstrating stability. The last thing they want to do is create havoc."

Titles are important in North Korea and part of the myth-building surrounding the Kim family legacy.

Kim Il Sung, the country's first and only president, retains the title Eternal President even after his death.

Kim Jong Il held three main positions: chairman of the National Defense Commission, general secretary of the Workers' Party and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army. According to the constitution, his position as chairman of the National Defense Commission made him Supreme Leader of North Korea.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general last year and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. Since his father's death, North Korean officials and state media have given him a series of new titles: Great Successor, Supreme Leader and now Great Leader.

Reger Dowell leaving OSU team, Travis Ford confirms

Oklahoma State basketball coach Travis Ford made it official Tuesday, confirming in a press release that junior point guard Reger Dowell is no longer a member of the team.

The next thing to be confirmed is senior Keiton Page moving over from shooting guard to become the Cowboys? starting point guard.

Notes for OSU?s next game -- 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against SMU at American Airlines Center in Dallas -- were included in the same email as the press release confirming Dowell?s departure.

Page and Markel Brown are listed as the starting guards in the game notes.

Page has experience at point guard and has started at that position in the past. A source indicated that a decision was made to move Page to point guard before Dowell made the decision to leave.

OSU began this season with three point guards -- Dowell, sophomore Fred Gulley and freshman Cezar Guerrero. Gulley left the team (playing time was cited as a factor) following a Dec. 17 game against New Mexico and Dowell started the only game since.

On Monday night, a source close to the program told the Tulsa World that Dowell was leaving. In the press release, Ford said, ?We appreciate what Reger has done for us over the past two seasons. We wish him nothing but the best and wish him well in his future endeavors.?

Dowell had played in 11 games this season and was averaging 5.5 points and 1.7 assists. He scored a season-high 11 points in an overtime win against UTSA.

Dowell, who has not redshirted, played in 53 games. He had a career average of 3.9 points and recorded 50 assists in 53 games.

?camila alves : What would be the cheapest car insurance compared to wages for a young driver or teenager.

Cheapest car insurance and wages for teenager or young driver

Response ; Camila and excellent question. When you are making a statement of how cheap car insurance is it has to be compared with something and what better than the wages- since this would definetly answer the question of whether you can afford to buy a car. Remember one thing, here the focus is only on car insurnce and not on any other cost which might be related with a car like car installments, maintaining the car and so forth.

This is an example given be car insurance site and the same is being given here,

The 1997 Ford Taurus was never an exciting vehicle, and now it is an old and tired one. Worth perhaps $2,500 but still ubiquitous (Polk says there are 242,390 still on the road), it is the choice of someone who has no choice.

Yet even this vehicle ? or any similar no-frills ride? represents a huge expense for the 4 million or so Americans working a minimum-wage job.

Minimum-wage workers tend to be young. Half of them are under 25, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. ?We priced basic state-minimum auto insurance quotes fromm coast to coast on that proverbial Taurus, driven by a 24-year-old male with no tickets and good credit.

In Springfield, Ill., he would have to work 55 hours at that state?s $8 minimum wage to pay a year?s worth of the state?s minimum liability coverage on his beater car. In Denver, 103 hours.

And in Albany, N.Y., Trenton, N.J., or Hartford, Conn., he would have to work more than a month of minimum-wage hours to buy the lowest amount of car insurance required.

CarInsurance.com looked at bare-minimum policies for a young driver in each state?s capital.

They are, however, a good indicator of the financial hurdle confronting any young driver who depends on his own car to commute to school or work.

What a 24-year-old pays for state-minimum liability

* Data missing or unavailable at time of publication

+ New Hampshire drivers must show proof of financial responsibility in the event of an accident

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, though many states set their own higher and a few go as low as $5.15.

Keeping even an old beater on the road anywhere will consume a large amount of that bare-bones income. Gasoline is a big expense, but ultimately a controllable one:? You can walk, take the bus, combine your trips, or carpool.

But no one will split the cost of your insurance policy, which as a car owner you are legally required to buy in every state except New Hampshire (and even in New Hampshire, most people buy insurance). ?States set their own levels of acceptable coverage. Maine and Alaska demand the most: $50,000 to cover the injuries of anyone you might hit ($100,000 total for any single accident), and $25,000 to cover the damage to other cars you cause.

There are very few trade-offs available to save money.

For example, you can?t reduce your limits below these minimum amounts. Mostly these state-mandated policies have coverage limits that are very low anyway ? the $10,000 property damage limit required in many states wouldn?t come close to replacing a newer-model car.

And you can?t raise your deductible. There are no deductibles on liability insurance.

The cost of liability insurance has more to do with the driver than the car. (The insurance company isn?t going to fix your car, just the person?s you hit.) In your search for cheapest car insurance, these are the factors you have some control over:

Your driving record: More than one violation or accident is going to hurt.Your credit: If it?s dismal, you?re seen as a bigger risk of a claim and thus charged more in many states.

Your mileage: The less you drive,? the less risk of your hitting someone.Your insurance history: If you?ve let your policy lapse, even for a few days, you?ll pay about 5 percent more than you would have otherwise, according to Insurance.com.Your insurance company: No two insurers offer identical rates, and even on state-minimum policies,? premiums can differ by hundreds of dollars a year.

Compare young drivers car insurance quotes or teen insurance quotes or car insurance quotes and find out which insurance company is providing the cheapest car insurance.

Insurers do look at your car, and if it has a significantly higher rate of claims than most (because, say, it?s driven mostly by young drivers), your liability rates will reflect that risk.

Good luck and happy driving.

Looking for partners for interesting role plays

Hey there,

I'm Akira and I've been role playing for a little more two years now. I'm looking for a few people to start role playing with. I'm usually good at coming up with ideas but like having someone to bump those ideas off of and forming a greater role play with; Like a snowball. :D I'm pretty laid back, at least I like to think so, but I like planning so everyone is on the same page. I'm a little shy so I love it when people speak their minds. :3
I usually write four paragraphs and up. I've had up to eight characters before but prefer around four. I certainly don't mind groups, in fact, I really like them since that means even more people to throw ideas in and make it unique. I usually have male characters but may throw a female in there time to time. I'm fine with pretty much any gender/type relationship.
I am a high school student, currently on break, so there is a good chunk of the day I can't reply but will once I get home. Also, my cat likes to try to type. ^.^;

Role plays I'm interested in

Asylum - about to have one going but willing to start another
Horror - gore, gore, death, torture, gore. X3
Fantasy - Modern, Dark, Medieval, etc
Sci-fi - Like 'Mass Effect' and such
    Romance
    Realism
    Music
    Mythological
    Dante's Inferno
MMORPG based - taking part in both 'real life' and in the game.
Fandoms - There is a lot so just ask :3

There is a lot more I'd be willing to do but those are just my top few. If you have any ideas and want to throw them my way feel free. I'm open to most ideas.

Here's an idea I had:

Two males in their early twenties enter the life of prostitution. After a few years of working, one gets tired, numbs, and sick of the lifestyle. Something snaps in him and he begins killing females within a certain age group.

    1. The other male could go along with it and help him in murdering many women

    2. It could be unknown to the other male and they remain friends until he finds out

    3. The other male could find out early on and try to get him to stop

Bit-tech's Mod of the Year contest underway: finally, something you're comfortable voting on

Like ponies to little girls, we always have a soft spot for mods here at Engadget. Who could forget Angel OD's liquid-cooled Wii, for example? Or Peter Brands' Frankendesk of a PC, the L3p D3sk? Well, it seems like we're not the only ones whose fancies got tickled by these things, as both made the list of nominees for bit-tech's Mod of the Year 2011 competition. The contest is serving up its biggest field to date with 25 projects. Entries include a PC that doubles as a mini Warhammer Dreadnought and another computer encased in a Star Trek Intrepid Mark II Class starship replica. If your tastes lean more toward the older than old school kind, Jeffrey Stephenson's got one of his wooden mods included in the bunch, as well. Naturally, you can check out the rest of the entries (and cast your votes) at the source below.

[Thanks, Antony]

Cisco Linksys E4200 v2 Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900

Linksys' E4200 v2 Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900 router ($200) does not look any different from the original E4200, which came to market at the beginning of this year. That's a good thing, too because the E4200 is perhaps the most stylish consumer router available. The difference between the E4200 v2 and the original are under the surface. A ratcheted-up processor, tweaked software and a flawless setup process makes the E4200 a router that delivers power to even the most technically clueless of users.

Make no mistake?it's expensive, at a list price of $200. That price should come down somewhat if purchasing through various online retailers. However, if you are looking for a router with speed only topped by Netgear's powerful N750 and N900 dual-band routers, and you want an even simpler setup and user experience than Netgear provides; the E4200 v2 is the router to choose.

Hardware Specs

The E4200 v2 is Cisco Linksys' first router to provide throughput of up to 450 Mbps on both the 2.4- and 5-GHz bands.? This is achieved by 3x3 spatial stream MIMO antenna arrays for both bands. Six internal antennas along with internal and external amplifiers help the router keep good throughput at range?although not as consistent as that of Netgear's N750 and N900 routers.

The E4200 v2 has four Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a USB port for connecting printers and external storage. The processor has been upgraded from 533 MHz from the previous E4200 to 1.2 Ghz which results in faster copy and file transferring to and from a connected USB storage device.

Related StoryCheck out How to Buy a Wireless Router

Setup

The setup process is fantastic: the best we've ever seen. Setup takes only a couple of minutes and does not require anything more than a computer with a working wireless adapter. You need no wired connection to get the E4200 v2 set up. During setup, I ensured the laptop I was using wasn't connected to the Internet via one of the many WLANs in proximity. The router sets up SSIDs, security and other preliminary configurations. Not only that, but after configuring, my laptop was connected to the newly created wireless network without requiring me to do anything. ?

By default, the router gives both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands the same SSID. This way, wireless devices will typically select the most appropriate band, which is fine for those who don't want to deal with the underbelly of networking. I prefer to distinguish the 5 GHz band by denoting it as "<SSIDname>-5" because this makes it easier for me to select which devices should access which band for myself. For more on which of the most popular wireless devices connected to which bands, check out The Wi-Fi You Need For The Gadgets You Want.

The features are the same as in latest E-series routers. You can read the full description of features in the Cisco Linksys E3200 review. The Cisco Connect software is a user-friendly interface for setting up parental controls, guest networking and other tasks. The only management you can't do it from it is work with devices connected to the USB port. That has to be done through the advanced settings interface.

Testing and Performance

The E4200 v2 is a speedy performer, only bested by Netgear's latest dual-bands. I was a bit disappointed with the range?throughput dropped 7 percent as I moved from 5 to 30 feet?just a little more than the E3200's which has a drop of only 4 percent. You are still getting excellent throughput at longer distances, however, so this is not a big issue.

Other than the range, my only other issue is how hot a portion of the bottom of the router got after leaving it up for a day and half. There are air vents at the bottom and running underneath the lip of the top chassis, so the hardware should be protected. The hottest part was a plastic strip running underneath the bottom with information like the serial number printed on it. Hopefully there is nothing important hardware-wise under that strip.

File copy performance to and from an attached storage device has greatly improved over older E-series routers with the same capability. ?Uploading a 1.5 GB file to an attached 250 GB USB external drive clocked 7.7 Mbps over 5 GHz. Download speed was an impressive 13 Mbps. This is better performance than copying a file with the Cisco Linksys E3000, which only managed 6.25 Mbps download. The improvement is due to the buffed-up processor in the E4200 v2. The USB can support a printer or serve as a connection for external storage to serve light network-attached storage needs.

Here are the throughput benchmarks at 2.4 GHz in Mixed mode, channel width set to "Auto 20/40 MHz" encryption set to WPA2/WPA compared to other dual-band routers:

Here are the throughput numbers at 5 GHz, 802.11n-only mode, with channel width set to 40 MHz and ecryption set to WPA2 Personal:

Our Favorite Dual-Band Router

The E4200 v2 is our new Editors' Choice for dual-band routers. While Netgear had faster throughput with the N750 and N900, the E4200 v2 also has excellent throughput and its setup process and software can't be beat. This is a future-proof router with support for IPv6 and is an excellent choice for the home with lots of data demand and lots of wireless gadgets whose users don't want any hassle with setup and maintenance.

APNewsBreak: 10,000 US troops leave Afghanistan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's order to withdraw 10,000 American troops from Afghanistan this year has been accomplished, a little more than a week before the year-end deadline, military officials said Thursday.

The drawdown is the first step in the plan to wind down the war, transition security to Afghan forces and end the combat role for international troops by the end of 2014.

It also gives the Obama administration a second war-related accomplishment to tout this month ? coming just a week after U.S. officials marked the end of the war in Iraq and the last convoy of American soldiers rumbled out of that country into Kuwait.

Officials say there are now 91,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan ? down from the peak of 101,000 in June.

In December 2009 Obama announced he was sending an additional 33,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan in a bid to beat back the escalating Taliban insurgency and change the course of the war. Six months ago, declaring that the "tide of war is receding," Obama said he would withdraw 10,000 troops by the end of this year, and another 23,000 by the end of next summer.

The decision was met with initial opposition from military leaders who thought the withdrawal was too much, too soon, particularly since it would pull troops out before the end of next year's fighting season, which can last well into October and even November.

Last week, however, during a trip to Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta repeatedly told troops that the U.S. had reached a turning point in the war. And at one point he went so far as to say, "I really think that for all the sacrifices that you're doing, the reality is that it is paying off and that we're moving in the right direction. ... We're winning this very tough conflict here in Afghanistan."

Contrasting that assessment is the ongoing violence in Afghanistan's east, along the Pakistan border, and the high-profile attacks and assassinations that continue to wreak havoc in and around Kabul. The violence is compounded by worries about government corruption, the fragile economy, and fears that Afghan forces won't be ready to take over security of the country as American and NATO troops leave.

(AP Photo/Michel Euler)

ROME (AP) ? Italy's health ministry on Thursday asked hospitals to track down women who received silicone breast implants made by a suspect French company due to concerns the implants may be unsafe.

The ministry's health council also said the national health system would pay to have the Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, implants removed if medical conditions required it, such as if they ruptured.

While saying there was no proof of any greater cancer risk among women with PIP implants, the council suggested that women with the implants contact their surgeons because there's a "greater probability of rupture and inflammatory reaction."

The council met Thursday in an emergency session on the eve of an expected decision by French health authorities over whether to recommend mass surgery for thousands of women who received PIP implants.

French investigators say the implants were made with cheap industrial silicone, not medical grade silicone, and that more than 1,000 women in France have had one or two implants burst. In addition, there have been eight cases of cancer among women with the implants, including one who died in November.

Italy's health ministry estimates that about 4,000-4,300 PIP devices have been implanted in women in Italy. From 2005 to today, some 24 ruptures have been reported.

Italy recalled the implants April 1, 2010, a day after French health authorities reported that they had suspended the sale, distribution and exportation of PIP implants after discovering that the vast majority were made with industrial silicone.

Hungary tech firm immortalizes Steve Jobs in bronze (Reuters)

BUDAPEST (Reuters) ? A Hungarian software company unveiled what it said was the world's first bronze statue of Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs Wednesday, calling him one of the greatest personalities of the modern age.

Jobs died on October 5 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 56.

The bronze work by sculptor Erno Toth stands in the Budapest campus of architectural software maker Graphisoft.

"He was one of the greatest (personalities) in our era, that's what we wanted to express with this sculpture here," Graphisoft Chairman Gabor Bojar told Reuters.

Bojar said Jobs gave cash and computers to Graphisoft, helping it to become a global leader in architecture software from humble roots as a tiny firm in the 1980s in then-communist Hungary.

"In some ways, Apple was a religion," Bojar said at the unveiling ceremony, comparing the experts from Cupertino-based Apple who helped educate Graphisoft's engineers to evangelists.

Steve Jobs represented a technological revolution which can be compared only to the discovery of writing, Bojar said.

"We have felt his spirit every day and now it is embodied," he said. "We hope that we can deserve with our entrepreneurial culture in Hungary what this sculpture expresses as a message."

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - With Tilda Swinton having racked up Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for her role in "We Need to Talk About Kevin," distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories has pushed up the New York City release date for the psychological thriller.

The film -- which is based on Lynne Ramsay's novel of the same name -- will now be released January 13 at two theaters in New York: the Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and Angelika Film Center. A week later, it will hit the Arclight Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles.

The movie, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12, had a one-week Oscar-qualifying run in the U.S. earlier this month.

"The film's attendance exceeded even our highest expectations," Oscilloscope Laboratories President David Fenkel said in a statement. "Theaters are excited to have a quality arthouse genre film to bring in younger audiences."

Swinton has already won multiple awards for her role in "Kevin," including best actress trophies from the National Board of Review, San Francisco Film Critics and British Independent Film Awards.

The movie also stars John C. Reilly.

Radiohead guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood composed the film's score.

Fierce winds and snow snarl Great Plains travel

A deadly storm that halted travel throughout the Great Plains weakened Tuesday as it headed east into Missouri and toward the Great Lakes, and officials reopened interstates in areas where motorists had been forced to adjust holiday plans mid-trip.

Authorities still were reporting snow drifts of up to 10 feet high in southeast Colorado, and Texas officials warned drivers to stay off the road in the Panhandle so crews would have a clear path to remove ice and snow. Major highways in the western half of the Oklahoma Panhandle remained closed.

Still, officials reopened Interstate 40 in the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico, and portions of Interstate 70 in western Kansas that had been closed. New Mexico reopened a closed section of Interstate 25, the main highway from Santa Fe to the Colorado line after crews cleared drifts as high as 5 feet. The storm dumped as much as 15 inches of snow as it hit parts of five states.

At least 40 people were stranded at the Longhorn Motel on Main Street in Boise City, Okla., where manager Pedro Segovia said blowing snow had created drifts 2- and 3-feet high and closed the main road.

Video: Six dead as blizzard slams Southwest, Great Plains

"Some people cannot even get out of their houses. There is too much snow," Segovia said. "It's was blowing. We've got big piles. It's real bad."

Receptionist MaKenzee Grove sympathized with the 50 or so people stranded at the hotel where she works in Guymon, about 60 miles east of Boise City. She too spent Monday night there.

"I have this rinky-dink car that does not do well in this," Grove said. "If we wouldn't have had the wind, it wouldn't have been as bad. The winds ... made the drifts really bad."

A few guests traveling to Oklahoma City managed to leave Tuesday, but others would likely have to wait another night before all roads were clear, she said.

In Kansas, schools in Manhattan canceled classes Tuesday, anticipating several inches of snow. The National Weather Service reported later that 3 inches or less fell.

To the east, a cold rain pelted the Topeka area, turned into a mix of light sleet and snow without much accumulation and tapered off. Forecasters said the storm became less potent as it moved northeast toward the Great Lakes.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner said the patrol dealt with dozens of accidents in which motorists slid off highways Tuesday morning.

"We had ice-covered roads, covered by snow packed on top," he said.

The late-autumn snowstorm lumbered into the region Monday, turning roads to ice and reducing visibility to zero. Many of the areas hit Monday had enjoyed relatively balmy 60-degree temperatures just 24 hours earlier.

The storm was blamed for at least six deaths Monday, authorities said. Four people were killed when their vehicle collided with a pickup truck in part of eastern New Mexico where blizzard-like conditions are rare, and a prison guard and inmate died when a prison van crashed on an icy road in eastern Colorado.

The Colorado Army National Guard said it rescued two stranded motorists early Tuesday in eastern Las Animas County, in the state's southeast corner, using a special vehicle designed to move on snow. Smaller highways in that area remained closed.

Authorities were investigating whether severe weather played a role in the crash of a single-engine plane in eastern Texas Monday night. Five people, including two children, were killed.

Ernest Contreras, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the crash happened Monday night just before 10 p.m. (11 p.m. ET) in a farming and ranching community in Brazos County. Everyone on the plane was killed.

Contreras said the flight originated in Atlanta, stopped in Jackson, Miss., and was headed for Waco, Texas, when it crashed.

Two adults, a two-year-old child and a teenager were found dead inside the plane, while another adult was found about 50 yards away, KBTX.com reported, citing Department of Public Safety troopers.

KBTX.com said the pilot had spoken to air traffic control at Forth Worth after getting into bad weather and was told to take a specific course, but flew in the opposite direction, according to the DPS.

"It's a pretty horrific scene over there," Sgt. Charles Booker told KBTX.com.

Meanwhile, weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said there was a chance of snow in the Northeast for the Christmas weekend.

"There are two possible scenarios for Christmas weekend in the Northeast," he said.

Erdman said an area including Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston could see accumulations of snow, although also with a chance of rain.

However he said under the second scenario, the I-95 Boston-to-Washington corridor could get "predominantly rain."
