Spokesman: Pakistani president to visit India soon

A spokesman says Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will travel to neighboring India soon to visit the shrine of a famous Sufi Muslim saint.

Zardari would be the first Pakistani head of state to visit India since 2005. The two countries have been bitter enemies since they were formed following the breakup of the British empire. But relations have thawed somewhat over the last year.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Sunday that Zardari's trip was initially planned to be a private visit. But he held out the possibility that it could turn into an official one.

Babar said Zardari will visit the Ajmer Sharif shrine in the western state of Rajasthan. He said the visit is likely to take place "very soon" but exact dates are being worked out.
