Prisoner X detained in Israel after suspected Mossad agent allegedly passed secrets to Australian intelligence agents

A suspected Mossad agent found hanged in his prison cell was arrested by his Israeli spymasters because they thought he had betrayed sensitive details about his activities to their Australian counterparts, it was claimed on Monday.

In the months before his detention, Ben Zygier, also known as Prisoner X, reportedly met agents with the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation and gave away secrets about several Mossad missions, including one planned for Italy that had taken years to prepare.

The disclosure, by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation?s (ABC) Foreign Correspondent programme, will raise questions about Mossad?s frequently used practice of recruiting dual citizens to work as undercover agents.

Mr Zygier, who was born in Australia but held Israeli nationality after emigrating, was found dead in his high-security cell in a Tel Aviv jail in December 2010. Israeli officials say he committed suicide but kept his death a secret until last week when ABC reported that he was an Australian citizen and worked for Mossad.

In fresh revelations, ABC said Mr Zygier had established a communications company in Europe, employing two other Australian dual nationals. The venture exported electronic components to Iran as well as to Arab countries.

Mr Zygier returned to Australia often with his Israeli wife and two children and on one occasion enrolled on a business degree course in Melbourne. It was one such visit that brought him into contact with Australian intelligence agents.
